Has anyone had to deal with an employee whose personal hygiene was so bad that the other employees refuse to work next to him? How did you handle the situation? What if it is a temporary employee?

In my office, we face that problem with an employee. To be honest, I didn't have to address that with him, the other employees did on their own. His supervisor had a few friendly words with him and that seemed to take care of it...for a while. When things get a little too "out there" for the others, He just gets reminded that working conditions around him have become difficult. As the HR Admin for my office, I think this is a good approach. Since I don't work around this individual on a daily basis, suggestions from me might seem offensive. If his coworkers make subtle gestures, he's more likely to respond positively. I'd like to point out that I do keep an assessment of the situation to make sure that he's still treated with the same respect that the others are. I make sure that gestures and comments toward him are not untoward or rude.

Make sure you discuss expectations in your employee handbook. This will give you something to point to if you need to address the situation directly. Feel free to PM me if you would like some assistance in drafting a policy, I have a smple I can share..
