Description
Even when benefits material is well translated and presented, Spanish speakers are still reluctant to participate in insurance and retirement plans. This tendency frustrates all parties who have invested in communication in Spanish—HR managers, brokers, carriers, etc. Business opportunities are lost, and the Spanish speakers themselves miss out on valuable ways to build security and stability for themselves and their families.

Most English speaking HR professionals are confused as to why this happens and are at a loss as to how to improve the situation. While this is sometimes the issue is the cost of the benefit (especially in regards to health insurance, if their employer is not covering the majority of the premium), there are many powerful factors at work that predispose the Spanish-speaking community against insurance and retirement plans.

This discussion will address misconceptions that Spanish speakers commonly hold about insurance, finance, and wellness and will present practical and cost-effective strategies for conducting effective enrollment meetings—which do NOT involve anyone learning Spanish! The goals will be to maximize participation among Spanish speakers and ensure that they use the plans correctly.
