Coaching Ourselves

Phil LeNir had a problem. The three rounds of layoffs and offshore outsourcing of work to the Ukraine had pushed his managers into uncharted territory. They didn’t know how to deal with these new challenges. Phil would have liked to send his managers to a top end development program like the IMPM but he had no budget or time. Sound familiar? With McGill’s Henry Mintzberg he hit upon a solution — Using relevant managerial topics and their own experiences, managers coach each other!

Professionals like engineers, accountants, and marketing analysts receive extensive training in their technical area as a matter of course.  But many are at a loss in the difficult area of managing people. Large companies like GE have well developed programs to train, mentor and nurture managers.  But many other companies do not have the resources of GE.  What can we do instead?  Phil Le Nir developed an approach and material to get managers to coach themselves.
