June 29, 2006 Ottawa, ON: Following consultation with experts from Canadian industry, education and government, the Software Human
Resource Council (SHRC) is pleased to announce the selection of Wireless Technology to undergo an exploration of its future by means
of a Technology Roadmap (TRM).
The TRM will enable SHRC to report on the steps required to prepare Canada to become a future leader
in the ICT sector and forecast the skill needs and core competencies required for success. With support from Human
Resources and Social Development and Industry Canada, SHRC has already begun the next phase of this project. This
includes the development of the Technology Roadmap which is aimed at addressing specific details, planning a global
strategy, defining Canada's strengths and opportunities as well as its commercial deficiencies.
"Wireless telecommunications technologies, such as wireless local area networks or mobile communications systems,
are flourishing technologies with limitless potential worldwide," explains President of SHRC Paul Swinwood. "We have taken
the first steps in a long process, but it is a process we know has invaluable opportunities."
The decision to focus on Wireless Technology was made following a full day session involving 60 experts.
The meeting involved discussion on the viability of Canada's potential for global success in researching,
developing and providing the technology.
"This Technology Roadmap will include every aspect needed to ensure Canada's success in this market,"
explained Mr. Swinwood. "Following the analysis of wireless technology we plan to use our experience and resources
to begin scoping other technologies such as: Sensor Networks, Data Mining, Nanotechnology and Photonics."
