Unum expands absence management services

Creates unified tracking of employer-authorized policies, FMLA and disability

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (May 8, 2007) – Unum (NYSE: UNM) is expanding its industry-leading absence management services to include all employer-authorized leave such as vacation and sick leave, creating a comprehensive tracking and reporting system.

Designed specifically to meet the needs of larger employers, this service helps staffing departments keep more accurate watch on the revolving door of its workforce. It records scheduled and unscheduled absences from the half-day needed for a doctor’s appointment, to the week requested for PTO, to the extended absence for convalescence from surgery.

“We see a significant increase in the number of large customers who want a comprehensive approach for tracking and reporting employee absence,” said Rob Hecker, vice president of leave management services. “A total view of lost time patterns helps businesses ensure adequate staffing levels and control costs. It is a crucial service for industries such as health care, manufacturing or call centers.”

When employees are out of work unexpectedly or on disability or FMLA leave, a business may experience a drop in productivity, incur expenses for temporary replacement staff and struggle with the complexities of statutory reporting requirements. Indeed, Employee Benefit News reported in January that overall costs of sick time, personal time and disability leave can cost an estimated 9 percent of payroll.

“Given the increasingly global nature of competition and the increased cost of U.S. labor due to healthcare costs, there is no bigger issue facing employers than maximizing the productivity of their workforces,” said Mike Simonds, senior vice president of product development and marketing.

Hecker agrees: “Effective absence management can help a business discover the trends in – and causes for – employee lost time. This information helps the business manage the associated costs of absence by tailoring staffing solutions that are aligned to its needs and employee culture.”

Unum’s new absence management service builds on the company’s highly successful FMLA service that tracks and integrates family and medical leaves and disability leaves. The FMLA service has doubled in size every two years since 2003 and is on a pace to reach 1 million covered employees by 2008.

“These absence management services are an example of the innovation that defines Unum,” Simonds says. “We help organizations attract and retain quality employees and reduce the cost of absenteeism – ultimately creating a more productive workforce and, as a result, a stronger business.”

The expanded absence management service is available for customers with 2,000 or more employees.
