PHILADELPHIA, PA – August 10, 2010 – As many as 75% of employees find their work to be meaningful, according to a new poll from Right Management. Only 4% of employees rarely or never find meaning in what they do. Right Management is the talent and career management expert within Manpower, the global leader in employment services.
The firm conducted the poll in partnership with LinkedIn® and received responses from more than 1,000 individuals throughout North America. Right Management asked the question: “Do you find your work to be meaningful?” The findings were:
· 42% Always
· 35% Usually
· 16% Occasionally
· 4% Rarely
· 1% Never
“Our findings suggest that most employees care about their work – how it challenges them, offers a sense of worth or allows them to contribute to larger organizational goals and values,” said Michael Haid, Senior Vice President for Global Solutions at Right Management. “But finding your work meaningful doesn’t necessarily translate into high performance. Companies want to aim for a convergence of meaningful work and high performance to further the organization’s objectives. It benefits the organization to not only help employees find the kind of work that inspires and motivates them, but ensure employees are committed to the success of their company.”
Haid indicated that creating this type of alignment can be difficult because each individual’s preferences are based on personal values and choices. “Managers are in a great position to identify individual preferences by regularly engaging employees in career discussions – uncovering those areas that drive increased levels of meaning and satisfaction.”
The challenge is to dig a little deeper and learn whether these same employees are engaged with their job as well as the organization, advised Haid. “Who we term as ‘free agents’ – those who are mostly individual contributors and who are highly engaged in their job but not necessarily engaged with the company – are providing a lot of value to the organization but are most at risk of flight as soon as new outside opportunities are presented.”
Among key findings:
· Employees at smaller companies are more likely to find meaning in their work. Forty-two percent of employees at small and medium-sized firms said they always find their work meaningful, while only 36% in large-size firms said the same.
· Sales Professionals were most likely to find meaning in their work, with 47% responding always, while Consultants were least likely, with 25% responding always.
· More men than women always find meaning, by 44% to 38%.
· Of those aged 25-34, 41% said they always find meaning in their work compared to only 28% of those aged 55+.
Right Management surveyed 1,021 individuals via an online poll on LinkedIn® conducted between June 4 and June 12, 2010.
