DENVER, CO— At its annual conference in Denver this week, the Council on Foundations presented a new set of “Ten Ways” reports designed to strengthen diversity and inclusive practices in the philanthropic sector. The three-volume set customized for three different foundation types – community, family, and independent – features inclusive approaches and best practices that foster diverse talent and use foundation resources more effectively. The “Ten Ways” reports will spark discussions and be a resource for the more than 1,100 philanthropic leaders gathered at the conference and others around the globe.
Amid an increasing demand for philanthropic services, foundations leaders are looking for ways to be more effective and deliver greater impact. Diverse staff and leadership are imperative for effective philanthropy and service to families and communities in need. The “Ten Ways” report series capture the challenges and opportunities to improve diversity experienced across all three sectors: community, family, and independent foundations.
“The reach and impact of foundations is growing everyday,” said Steve Gunderson, president and CEO of the Council on Foundations. “A larger and increasingly diverse population now benefits from and depends on the services provided through philanthropy. Our new “Ten Ways” reports offer support to leaders as they work to recruit, develop, and nurture top-notch ‘Now and Next Generation’ talent and innovation.”
Readers will learn specific issues philanthropic leaders should consider as they work to more effectively manage a changing economic and community landscape. They will also find actionable steps community, family, or independent foundations can take to strengthen their organizations and the impact on the communities they serve. These include:
- cultivating an internal culture reflective of a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness
- drawing on a wide array of perspectives and backgrounds when planning or evaluating projects
- expanding grantmaking to diverse communities and projects
- assessing how the organization is perceived by the public
- sharing best practices on diversity and inclusiveness
The “Ten Ways” reports are central to the Council’s efforts to promote and advance diversity and inclusive practices in philanthropy. Other initiatives include the Career Pathways Program, an innovative leadership development program aimed at recruiting and retaining diverse and talented leadership in philanthropy’s most senior levels.
