Syosset, NY - Mar 29, 2006 Technology is changing the way companies innovate, creating what one author and strategy consultant calls "the biggest change in a century" in "the nature of the corporation itself." Thanks to advances in pervasive computing, the explosion in bandwidth, the adoption of communication standards, and the rise of Web services, companies are reaching out and collaborating with customers, business partners, and even competitors to stimulate innovation and revenue growth. That´s a dramatically different approach from the traditional model, where companies single-handedly financed, invented, and commercialized their innovations.
"There is a fundamental change taking place in terms of how corporations create value and arguably, in terms of the core architecture of the corporation," said Don Tapscott, president of New Paradigm Learning Corp. and adjunct professor of management at the University of Toronto. "I think it´s the biggest change in a century in the ways that companies build relationships and interact with other entities, institutions in the economy and in society and arguably, the nature of the corporation itself."
That´s what 30 Chief Technology Officers heard during a recent IBM-sponsored conference on collaborative innovation. This live event is now available for online viewing by special arrangement with IBM and WatchIT - a leader in on-demand education. The program is part of WatchIT's Systems Institute website, the source to find real world experience and best practices on IBM Systems Group's products and services.
According to Tapscott, the walls between companies are beginning to break down, enabling the creation of what he calls the open-networked enterprise. With this model, "you can co-create now with all kinds of stakeholders, co-designing products and services with customers, for example," he said. "This is a new platform for something fundamentally different. This is not your mom´s or your dad´s collaboration. This is something very different that´s emerging."
The program, approximately 80 minutes in length, is presented in WatchIT´s acclaimed "Knowledge Navigator" platform. This interactive interface includes a full, rich-media presentation, including video, graphics, and animation, as well as value- added educational resources such as Web links, white papers, a glossary of terms, and a multiple- choice test.
