Detroit Arsenal, Warren, MI (Vocus/PRWEB ) January 22, 2010 -- The U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) will infuse its ranks with new talent this June via a summer job hire program, and students interested in taking advantage of the opportunity can preview some leading-edge military programs at the TARDEC booth at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) through Sunday, Jan. 24.
TARDEC, the Nation's laboratory for advanced military automotive technology, is seeking high school, undergraduate and graduate-level college students interested in working on science and engineering programs like the development of hybrid-electric vehicles, fuel-efficient energy modules and advanced robotics – all technologies currently on display at the auto show in Detroit.
“TARDEC’s participation at the North American International Auto Show provides students with a great opportunity to preview the kinds of programs and technologies they may work on if they join the organization for the summer,” noted TARDEC Director Dr. Grace M. Bochenek. “We are looking for smart, enthusiastic, innovative young people to work side-by-side with our engineers and scientists on projects that will benefit our warfighters and Nation.”
Students accepted into the summer hire program will be assigned to work on projects developed by senior scientists and engineers. Projects will be identified on the basis of how much benefit they can offer to existing technology programs and how much opportunity they can offer to students to apply their own skills and knowledge to research and development tasks. Students will be able to develop their project management skills as well as scientific analysis capabilities while working for TARDEC.
TARDEC's participation at NAIAS highlights the organization's growing importance in Michigan and across the Nation as a focal point for military and commercial ground vehicle systems development and integration. That importance was underscored last week when U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and a contingent of federal legislators spent time speaking with TARDEC leadership and military personnel at NAIAS about energy conservation and security issues, automotive fuel efficiency, the application of robotics to military and commercial vehicles and public-private technology partnerships.
The very latest in hybrid-electric (HE) vehicle technology, advanced energy and battery developments and robotics are on display in TARDEC’s booth at NAIAS as part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s MEDC EcoXperience in Michigan Hall. TARDEC is displaying its Clandestine Extended Range Vehicle (CERV), Packbot bomb detection robot, Autonomous Platform Demonstrator (APD) and Electronic Power Control and Conditioning (EPCC) Module at the show.
Students with strong math and science skills who are interested in applying for a summer technology job as an engineering aid/engineering technician with TARDEC must be U.S. citizens and at least 16 years old by June 14, 2010. Students will be considered on the basis of their academic achievements, technical courses, work experience, extracurricular activities and special recognition. Salaries range from $10.59 to $14.58 per hour. Students can apply between Feb. 1-5 online at http://acpol.army.mil/employment/.
Employment for college students will begin Monday, June 7. Employment for high school students will begin Monday, June 14. The summer program ends Friday, Aug. 13.
