Benefits administration outsourcing goes back many years to the days of defined benefits pensions. In that era, firms lacked the actuarial sophistication to manage pensions in-house and therefore relied on expert providers. The move to defined contribution pensions created new challenges for HR and again vendors provided outsourcing solutions. Since those early days, HR benefits outsourcing has transformed from a specialist service ("we can help you administer pensions") to a full-service, technology-based opportunity for HR ("we can handle all your benefits processes so you can focus on strategic issues").
