SHRM Marks 20th Anniversary of ADA with Recommitment

New Resource Offers Employers Information on Disability Employment
Alexandria, Va. – July 23, 2010 – As the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act nears, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) unveiled a new resource for employers on recruiting, retaining and developing people with disabilities.

SHRM’s Disability Employment Resource Page has compiled information to help employers reach out to people with disabilities and ensure their workplaces foster environments that promote success. The web page also includes SHRM-produced videos showcasing experts in disability employment. The videos have features that facilitate their use by those with visual and hearing impairments.

The ADA, which was signed into law on July 26, 1990, prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment and mandates accessibility in public transportation, government services, telecommunications and accommodation.

SHRM was an influential voice providing human resource expertise as the ADA was being developing. Once the act was signed into law by then-President George H.W. Bush, SHRM built awareness of the new regulations among employers and provided critical education for human resource professionals responsible for helping organizations comply. In 2008, SHRM took the lead in efforts to improve the law, resulting in the ADA Amendments Act.

“For 20 years, SHRM has been at the forefront of advocating for people with disabilities in the workplace,” said President and CEO Laurence G. O’Neil, who reaffirmed SHRM’s support of the principles of ADA by joining other business and government leaders in signing a National Network of ADA Centers’ recommitment proclamation.

SHRM is a founding Alliance partner of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Policy, working to increase the employment of individuals with disabilities. As part of this partnership, SHRM has joined The Campaign for Disability Employment, a nationwide effort to highlight the value and talent people with disabilities bring to the workplace and the dividends realized by their full inclusion at work.
