RETAINING TODAY’S KNOWLEDGE FOR TOMORROW’S WORK FORCE

APQC’S NEW STUDY OUTLINES STRATEGIES AND TACTICS FOR KNOWLEDGE RETENTION AND TRANSFER
HOUSTON (July 2007) –- With looming waves of baby boomer nearing retirement and employee churn at an all time high, many of today’s organizations struggle to create an integrated work force management and knowledge retention and transfer strategy.   Organizations seeking to better understand knowledge retention and transfer processes and approaches can now access a new consortium study released by APQC, a recognized leader in benchmarking, knowledge management, and quality programs, which identifies best-practice methods embraced by some of the country’s top organizations.
The study, “Retaining Today’s Knowledge for Tomorrow’s Workforce,” identified 26 key best practice methods offering insight into how best-practice organizations are successfully addressing knowledge retention in a volatile business market.

Highlights of the study include:
·    Best-practice organizations assign high-level managers to act as stewards of core competencies.
·    Best-practice organizations identify Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and feature them in formal training courses.
·    Best-practices organizations develop and maintain a suite of powerful and effective knowledge retention and transfer approaches for the purposes of capturing, retaining and sharing tacit and explicit knowledge.

·    Mentoring and apprenticeship programs play a key role in implied, or tacit, knowledge transfer.
·    Best-practice organizations engage with SMEs in a more formal, structured manner for the purposes of knowledge retention and transfer.
·    Knowledge retention and transfer approaches span the employment lifecycle.

The best-practice organizations participating in the study included the The Aerospace Corporation, Fluor Corporation, Michelin North America Inc., NASA and Rolls-Royce.    To be selected for the study, these best-practice partners had to excel in one or more aspects of the study’s scope.  The APCQ study team used demonstrated excellence and a history of success in the study’s key areas of scope to identify these participants.
A report detailing the study’s key findings and providing in-depth case studies from the best-practice partners will be available to the public in October for $495.
