New Pharmacy Benefit Management industry standards prominent at URAC 2007 Quality Summit

Topic featured via education sessions, post-conference program
Washington, D.C. August 30, 2007 – Pharmacy Benefit Management will be in the spotlight during two educational sessions and a post-conference workshop at URAC’s 8th Annual Quality Summit, Oct. 3-5 at the Loews Lake Las Vegas Resort in Henderson, NV.  The intense focus on the topic follows the organization’s recent release of the industry’s first-ever independent accreditation program for pharmacy benefit management organizations.

The sessions will be part of a Managed Care Operations educational track offered at the annual Summit, which attracts health care management executives, influential thought leaders and medical professionals from across the nation.  Summit speakers are drawn from the country’s top leadership in health care management.  Other themes explored this year will be Care Coordination and Health Information Technology.

“URAC tapped some of the nation’s leading thinkers in pharmacy benefit management for development of our Pharmacy Benefit Management Accreditation program,” said Alan P. Spielman, URAC’s president and chief executive officer.  “The Summit educational sessions on the topic will be led by many of those thought leaders and will shed light on the best practices in the field.”

The first session, “Raising the Bar on Pharmacy Benefit Management Quality” will be moderated by Janice Anderson, RPh, director of URAC’s Pharmacy Program and will include panelists James R. Lang, PharmD, MBA, vice president of pharmacy services for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan; and Lorna D. Taylor of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.  The session is designed to provide details of URAC’s new accreditation program and their relevance to the market as the standards relate to organizational quality, clinical quality and benefits management programs, pharmacy network access, and consumer education and support.

Another session, “Essentials of Prescription Drug Management,” features Matthew Brams, MD, medical director of Interface EAP; Michael Lewandowski of Pharmaceutical Strategies Group; Mary Lushina, RN, senior vice President of managed care services and COO of Employers Occupational Health Inc.; and Fred Newman, CEO of Interface EAP.  The panel will identify the strengths of pharmacy benefit administration in a workers compensation environment, including savings, along with measures addressing drug safety, drug utilization management, and the use of pharmacy data to address physician over-prescribing and identify cases of fraud and abuse. The session will include tips for reducing costs and increasing productivity through integrated behavioral health management and prescription intervention.

A post-conference workshop will round out the events and is designed to provide detailed information about the new pharmacy benefit management accreditation process and standards.

“URAC is a leader in accreditation for health care management organizations, and the opportunity to learn about latest trends and practices in health care quality across its many facets is unique to this forum,” Spielman said.
