WASHINGTON, D.C., December 6, 2006 – The National Association of Manufacturers helped announce today a new effort enabling employees, their dependents and retirees to maintain lifelong electronic health records, and to increase the health care quality and cost transparency in America.
“The use of health information technology is critical for attaining higher-quality health care and lower health costs,” NAM President John Engler said. “In manufacturing, innovative technology streamlines operations resulting in reduced costs, increased efficiency and better quality – all necessary to compete in a global marketplace. Health IT offers the same benefits for health care.”
The NAM joined leading US-based corporations including Applied Materials, BP America, Inc., Intel Corporation, Pitney Bowes and Wal-Mart to launch the web-based system, Dossia, which is intended to help employees better manage their health care, improve communications between doctors and patients, and reduce inefficiencies in the health care system.
“This new Dossia platform can provide the crucial infrastructure necessary to streamline our overly paper-based and outdated health records system – essentially creating a personal, private, and portable electronic medical history,” Engler said.
“Our health care system is rooted in the early 20th Century,” Engler continued. “Moving into the digital age will not just streamline our health care system and reduce medical errors, but also provide reliable health information – essential to empowering consumer decisions.”
The electronic health records application is being developed by Omnimedix Institute. More information on the program is available at
