NAM APPRECIATES SENATE AMENDMENTS TO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

Amendments Are a Step in the Right Direction
WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 10, 2009 – The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Executive Vice President Jay Timmons issued the following statement on “The Value and Innovation Amendment Package” introduced today by Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) and 10 other Freshman Senate Democrats to amend the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act proposed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV):

Manufacturers believe these amendments focus on what should be the focal point of the debate: cost containment and delivery reform. They address many of the fundamental problems in the existing health care system that drive up costs for everyone, such as system inefficiency, a lack of focus on quality, information sharing and accountability for measuring and improving the overall value of our health care system.

We commend Senators Mark Warner (D-VA), Kay Hagan (D-NC), Mark Begich (D-AK), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Roland Burris (D-IL), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Mark Kirk (D-MA), Ted Kaufman (D-DE), Tom Udall (D-NM), Mark Udall (D-CO) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) for their efforts to address these issues that are so critical to manufacturers.

While they are a step in the right direction, unfortunately, these amendments do not go far enough to fix the Senate health care bill. Manufacturers are concerned that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is so fundamentally flawed that we need to “start over” to have a meaningful discussion about reform.

We will continue to work with the Senate for a comprehensive health care bill that achieves real reform by reining in soaring costs, reducing burdens on business and expanding access to affordable care.
