Alexander 'Lex' Bono Joins Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP

The former general counsel to Commerce Bancorp will chair Schnader's securities litigation practice.
PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP is pleased to announce that Alexander "Lex" Bono has joined the Firm as a partner and chair of its securities litigation practice.  Mr. Bono most recently served as general counsel to Commerce Bancorp, the Philadelphia-based financial services retailer with assets of more than $48 billion.

"We could not be more pleased to welcome Lex to the Firm," said Chairman Ralph Wellington.  "He brings a wealth of experience to the table, both from his decades in private practice and from his time with Commerce Bancorp, where he served as the first general counsel in the organization's history, assisted in building its legal department from the ground up, and led Commerce through an aggressive period of successful growth.  I have no doubt that he will be a dynamic and valuable part of the Firm going forward."

Mr. Bono noted that the move to Schnader will provide the chance to return to private practice, to remain in the Philadelphia region, and to explore new professional opportunities.  "I am excited to be joining Schnader," he said.  "I felt that the Firm -- its people, its culture, and its resources -- provided a perfect fit for me as I looked to move into the next phase of my career."

Mr. Bono has close to 30 years of experience in complex business litigation, dispute resolution and legal counseling.  Most recently, he served as the first-ever general counsel for Commerce Bancorp, which is the largest locally-headquartered, independent bank in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.  While there he created, built, and managed the NYSE-listed company's legal department, and served as its primary counsel, advising on, managing and participating in -- both strategically and substantively -- most of the company's critical legal issues.

Prior to joining Commerce in 2004, Mr. Bono was in private practice for 27 years and was the first head of his previous law firm's corporate litigation practice group.  He has engaged in sophisticated litigation and counseling for a wide range of financial institutions such as commercial banks, investment banks, and broker/dealers, and has advised corporations, their officers and directors, and audit committees on internal investigations and a wide range of Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) related matters.  Additionally, he has significant experience in class action suits, shareholder derivative claims, regulatory investigations, corporate governance, business litigation issues and counseling, and dispute resolution.  Mr. Bono has conducted numerous trials and appeals in both federal and state courts, and before administrative agencies such as the SEC.  Additionally, as the practice chair, he was responsible for budgeting and strategic business planning for the group.

Mr. Bono has written numerous articles and lectured frequently on securities, class action and audit committee issues.  He served as the primary author and editor of the American Bar Association's "Model Jury Instructions for Securities Litigation" (American Bar Association, 1996), and his work as been published in the National Law Journal, as well as other trade, business and scholarly journals.  His various speaking engagements have included appearing as part of the Temple University School of Law LL.M. Trial Advocacy Program, as well as making presentations before the Center for Professional Education, the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the International Association for Financial Planning, among others.  A leader in the profession, he served for seven years as co-chair for the American Bar Association's committees charged with examining securities and accounting issues.

Mr. Bono has been a leader in the region and in the community as well, serving as a member on multiple civic and charitable boards, including the boards of St. John's Hospice, St. Edmond's Home for Children, Don Guanella Village, Women of Hope, and St. Gabriel's Hall.  Additionally, he served on the Board for Catholic Social Services for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia from 2000 -- 2006, participating on several different committees during his time on the board, including the Housing and Homeless Committee, the Mental Retardation Committee, and the Strategic Planning Committee.  Recognized and honored by the United Way for his community service work, Mr. Bono has served on several committees for this organization as well, including the Admission/Special Response Committee, the Fund Distribution/Central Allocations Committee, the Children's Services Review Committee and the Delaware County Review Committee, serving as both a member and as the Chairman of the Children's Services and Delaware County Review committees.  Closer to home, Mr. Bono has served as a manager and coach for Radnor Township Little League Baseball, as well as a coach for Youth Soccer.  Additionally, he is an active member of St. John Neumann Parish.

A graduate of the Temple University School of Law (J.D., 1977), he served as Research Editor of the Temple Law Quarterly.  He received his undergraduate degree from LaSalle College (B.A., 1974), where he graduated magna cum laude and was recognized as the "Outstanding Graduate in Political Science."
