Despite the recession and the effects of Sept. 11 on the economy, 23 million net new jobs will be created in the next 10 years if the trends of the last decade continue in our country. Management and management-related occupations will account for nearly 7 million new jobs - 29 percent of the total projected gains.
Professional jobs will increase overall by 7.5 million, including 2.5 million new jobs in mathematics and computer science and 2.1 million new jobs in teaching, based on Employment Policy Foundation tabulations of Current Population Survey data.
Employers of the future will compete for qualified candidates to fill these high-paying occupations that are in demand. Employers will seek strong quantitative and analytical reasoning skills in the fast growing management-related occupations. Management-related skills include: accounting, financial management, strategic planning, production management, statistical quality control, operations research, cost-benefit analysis, market research, program evaluation and performance measurement.
"While some jobs will see growth in the next decade," said EPF President Ed Potter, "other occupations, such as machine operators, precision production crafts and secretaries and clerks, will most likely see a decrease."
