Bensinger, DuPont & Associates Reports Rise in Holiday Blues

During the 2005 Thanksgiving holiday, Bensinger, DuPont & Associates reported a 17 percent increase in employees experiencing mental health and stress related issues as compared to the same time in 2004.

While depression affects roughly five percent of the population at any given time, it jumps during the holiday season --- affecting more than one million people each year.  "And, that number seems to be growing," says Terry Strickland of Bensinger, DuPont & Associates, a leading provider of employee assistance programs.  "During the 2005 Thanksgiving holiday, Bensinger, DuPont & Associates reported a 17 percent increase in employees experiencing mental health and stress related issues as compared to the same time in 2004."

Mr. Strickland notes that while many factors can lead to holiday stress and depression, it is often brought on by four main trigger points.

"With the number of people experiencing holiday depression, it is especially important at this time of year --- and even into the new year ---- that managers and supervisors be aware of the symptoms of depression and encourage affected employees to seek help," says Mr. Strickland.  "Research has shown that 80% of people with depression can be treated successfully.  The faster a diagnosis is made and the individual is referred to the appropriate treatment, the sooner he will be on the road to recovery."

Bensinger DuPont & Associates is a privately owned professional services company that is dedicated to promoting healthy outcomes for employees, the workplace, individuals and their families through a wide range of consultation, training and counseling services.

For additional information, Terry Strickland can be reached at 1-800-227-8620.
