Make Your Attitude an Asset Think of Your Employees as an Investment
Through the prime cost-cutting and downsizing years of the late 80s and early 90s, corporate executives would draw a cynical reaction whenever they mouthed the words, people are our most important asset. Now, when they say it, we are more likely to believe they really mean it. Why? Because if they dont, their very survival is threatened.

Surviving the Downturn: Considerations Before Trimming Your Workforce
Each day, it seems there is more bad news about corporate cutbacks, rising unemployment and an economy which seems to sink deeper and deeper into recession. The unemployment rate for December 2008 was 7.2%.1 Over 500,000 jobs were lost in December, and 1.4 million were lost over the last four months of 2008.2 Consensus is growing that efforts to reverse the economic slide will not work quickly, but instead a turnaround could take a year and probably longer. Is a Layoff the Right Choice? If your company is facing revenue shortfalls and/or a decline in business opportunities, cost reduction has probably become a significant goal. You may be considering a layoff of employees to bridge the gap and reduce costs. But is a layoff truly the best course of action? Alternative and possibly more effective techniques exist to cut costs, if management is flexible concerning its business strategy, or at least its personnel strategy. When contemplating a possible layoff, take a careful look at the potential costs and savings.

Introduction to International Background Screening of Job Candidates
Employers have long recognized that conducting due diligence on new hires is a mission critical task. Firms cannot afford to be sidetracked by employee problems such as workplace violence, theft, false resumes, embezzlement, harassment or trumped-up injury claims. Employers can be the subject of lawsuits for negligent hiring if they hire someone that they should have known, through the exercise of due diligence, was dangerous, unfit or unqualified.

The Holy Grail: HR & Learning Executives Driving Sustainable Growth in the Future
The “Holy Grail” of business is profitable growth. More specifically businesses are striving for sustainable, profitable growth. Our experiences have taught us there are three primary drivers that have the greatest impact on sustainable growth: 1) Customers,2) Culture and 3) Leadership. This model puts HR in a key position, as strategist, business partner and thought leader.

Are Your Hiring Practices Identifying Service Stars?
Two Best Practice Case Studies for Evaluating Service Talent. Competitors may try to duplicate your offerings…but they can’t duplicate your people. What can ultimately set you apart is the quality of your people and their interactions with your customers. In an environment where customer loyalty is critical to business survival, the emphasis that your organization places on hiring the right service-focused people is as critical as it has ever been. However, identifying the right candidates who possess the “service gene” can be a challenge – especially when the quantity (and not necessarily quality) of your applicant pool is rapidly growing. In this presentation we will highlight two case studies from the hospitality industry, and discuss how they have been able to identify the hospitality/service gene in potential applicants. We will use these case studies as a foundation to discuss best practices of selection processes for selecting hourly level as well as management level employees. We will discuss how to use your hiring practices as a competitive advantage by using a comprehensive hiring process and targeted assessments to help hiring managers determine which candidates have the natural talent and learned skills to provide excellence in service and hospitality.

Warning! Values May Be Detrimental to Your Organization’s Health
What percent of your employees can identify your organization’s values? How many of those individuals can tell you what each value “looks like” in terms of their own performance? Unless you are able to answer nearly 100%, you may want to consider taking these steps to improve the health of your organization!

The ROI of Selection: Identifying Key Performance Factors that Drive Bottom Line Results
The ability to accurately predict future job performance has long been the “Holy Grail” in hiring. While traditional recruitment efforts have focused on work history and previously acquired skills, advances in selection science have identified personality factors that influence future job performance. This webinar will examine how pre-employment assessments can be designed to be job relevant and discuss the best practices that human resource managers can adopt to align selection tools with key performance metrics that matter most within their organization.

Hourly Recruiting Best Practices
In this webcast, the experts from SnagAJob.com focus on a subject near and dear to us – hourly hiring. We will focus on some of the methods we have seen, both traditional and non-traditional, to attract and retain top talent. Some of the things that we’ll cover include an overview of the hourly job workforce, keys to effective job descriptions and building your pipeline. We’ll show you how right now is the perfect time to upgrade your staff and build a stronger team. The speakers will help audience members who are new to hourly recruiting gain a fundamental understanding of best practices and suggest improvements for those with an existing strategy.

Assessing Sales Capability in a Competitive Economy
Increasing sales and building revenue in a competitive economy is one of the most difficult challenges currently facing organizations. A competitive market can bring out the true colors of your sales staff. Those employees who have the appropriate skills find ways to be successful no matter what the economic climate. This poses a unique challenge to HR practitioners who are seeking to determine exactly what makes certain sales people successful while others are struggling.

Visa-Related Considerations for HR Managers Handling Layoffs
As the economy continues its unpredictable decline, many businesses are seeing more and more layoffs. The aftershocks of a decimated workforce undoubtedly have an affect on the team that's left behind to pick up the pieces, often charged with doing more, with a lot less. While it's difficult for any type of business to deal with, technology companies are being hit especially hard, due to the fact that many of their employees are foreign national visa holders. Finding a way to navigate these issues -- losing specialized employees that are hard to bring back temporarily or permanently when the tide finally turns -- is posing many problems for human resource managers. However, there are some solutions that these high-profile companies should take into consideration. Maryanne Kline, associate at Sullivan & Worcester Immigration Department, has outlined these suggestion in the article below, providing positive insight for businesses interested in making changes in their workforces, but whose leaders are unsure of the necessary steps for a smooth transition.

Employee Confidence
Employee Confidence is an action-focused, performance oriented construct that can be used to forecast and enhance the success of the organization by measuring key components of the workplace environment and the individual employee within that environment. This webcast will provide the latest information on the levels of Employee Confidence across USA, UK, China, Russia, India, Brazil, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, Canada, and Germany, the 12 largest economies in the world.

Performance Management Practices that Boost Employee Engagement
There’s a wide body of research that shows that companies whose workers are fully engaged have better corporate performance. It’s unmistakable. In these organizations the team delivers great work, innovation, and they understand that their efforts are linked to the goals of the organization, and linked to how they will be rewarded. This webcast will discuss the significant impact that effective employee performance management can have on increasing employee engagement, and driving higher performance. You’ll hear from Steve Roesler a leading expert in the field of leadership and engagement. Steve will discuss how managers are the mediators of employee engagement because employees see managers as their personal source for direction, feedback, and development, and are expected to have--and share--accurate data that can enhance daily performance. HR Leader Kathy Anthony, of O’Sullivan Creel, will also share her experience of how she transformed her organization to one where performance management is ingrained in their culture, and where employee satisfaction and engagement has vastly increased.

Making Compliance Training Matter: Mandatory Harassment Training in California, Connecticut, & Maine
Most employers have become familiar with the mandatory harassment training mandates that require training for managers in California, Connecticut, and Maine. Unfortunately, those in the business world often refer to such mandatory training as “check the box” training, relegating it to that which must be done but which will probably be ineffective at preventing and correcting sexually harassing behavior. Employers who want the sexual harassment training to be effective must look beyond fulfilling a requirement – simply checking a box – and insist on training that makes a difference in their workplace culture.

Surprising New Global Leadership Research Findings
When US Airways flight 1549 Captain Chesley Sullenberger pulled off the ‘Miracle on the Hudson' safe landing in the Hudson River, the world called him a hero. At Senn Delaney, we call him a high thriver. This amazing story of calm under fire and creatively overcoming incredible challenges offers a compelling lesson about why state of mind matters in times of great challenge. It illustrates what we recently learned in our new Thriving Global Leadership Study™ of thousands of leaders across 60 industries and 50 countries. The findings reveal a dramatic difference between those who are facing these times of crisis with what is defined as a high-thriving state of mind and those with a lower-thriving state of mind. The survey data shows that high-thriving leaders have the exact characteristics needed for success in the times we are in.

Joan Lloyd’s HR Words of Advice: Beware of Negative Job References
You've had several bites and interviews you felt went well, but you still haven't landed a job. How is that possible? Joan Lloyd shares some answers.

Assessing Credibility in Workplace Investigations
Human resource professionals are often confronted with situations in which they must determine whether what someone is saying is credible. When interviewing candidates, selecting vendors, handling employee relations, and most frequently, in conducting investigations, HR professionals must cut through the clutter and noise, hone in on the crux of the matter, assess the information in terms of what is most likely true, and make decisions accordingly. While is it true that the more experience one has doing this, the better he or she is at making accurate assessments, there is guidance that can help the less experienced make better assessments of credibility.

Creative Cost Control in Contentious Times: Implementing an ADR Program
With a little creative problem solving and program development, you can avoid some of the time and costs associated with the increase in employment-related claims that some companies are experiencing and others anticipate. This article discusses alternative dispute resolutions (ADR) and the questions you should ask, and answer, as you craft a program for your organization. First, you will need some additional background that will be helpful when you go to sell your ADR proposal to your management team. Discrimination claims filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) last year rose to the highest in the agency’s 44-year history, after a Supreme Court ruling that changed the way complaints may be filed.1 A record 95,402 claims were filed during the year ended Sept. 30, 2008, a 15 percent increase over the 2007 filings. More than 25 percent of claims filed contained an allegation of age discrimination while more than 34 percent of the filings included complaints of retaliation, according to the agency.2 The costs an employer will incur to resolve an EEOC charge can easily exceed $100,000. Any alternative that might reduce the number of claims proceeding to an EEOC charge or legal claim is well worth exploring.

Caution! – Using Search Engines, MySpace or Facebook for Hiring Decisions…
Employers and recruiters have uncovered what appears to be a treasure trove of applicant information on the internet. By searching the internet and social networking sites such as Facebook or MySpace, recruiters feel they are effectively able “to look under the hood” and try “to get into an applicant’s head.” … This article, however, examines why such an apparently easy to use and readily available tool has its dangers and drawbacks.

Solutions you can’t delay: Proactive shields against overtime suits & the Employee Free Choice Act
Possibly the two greatest concerns for employers at this time --overtime class actions and The Employee Free Choice Act ("EFCA") -- have one thing in common: Employers who are unprepared for these challenges will face significant and costly legal issues. An employer who has proactively audited his wage/hour practices and who is sued for overtime violations is often at the mercy of plaintiffs' lawyers. Similarly, upon passage of the EFCA, unsuspecting employers, who have not taken effective preventative measures, will have few successful options at their disposal. Fortunately, there are creative and effective strategies which can minimize and/or prevent wage hour class actions (with little to no change in operations), even for employers with a substantial history of non-compliance. Similarly, employers that institute prevention strategies before being faced with an organizing campaign under the EFCA are in a position to implement policies and strategies that render their workforce much less vulnerable to union advances. This webcast will provide employers the tools they need to institute preventative measures that can literally save millions of dollars.

Building the “Next Generation” of Diversity Metrics
Organizations have long-since tracked standard measures of workforce diversity, from staffing rates to turnover data. However, many organizations struggle to calculate the business impact of diversity, from creating more powerful employment branding propositions to delivering on customer-centric business models. Challenges include measuring traditional (gender) and non-traditional (learning styles) dimensions, moving from summary scorecards to deep analytics, and communicating the results of diversity measures. As such, in this webinar, Infohrm’s Nicholas Garbis will outline how leading organizations are overcoming both strategic and operational challenges to the effective measurement of diversity and share examples of innovative metrics that any organization can begin using today.
