Holiday Gifts for 2008

The holidays are almost here whether you are ready or not. Here are some tips from GiftTree.com for finding the right gift without breaking your budget.
Vancouver, WA November 19, 2008--It is that time of the year again. Wrapped gifts are under Christmas trees. Stories about holiday sales and charity toy drives dominate the 5 o’clock news. You are once again given the task to decide what to give employees for the holidays. This time you don’t have much of a budget to work with.

Deciding what to give co-workers for the holidays can seem like a daunting task. If you give the wrong gift, your company will seem out of touch or uncaring.

The right gift or gift basket can be remembered for years. With a little planning, you can find a well-received holiday gift without breaking your budget.

The first step is to determine what your company can afford. If your company didn’t do great this year, you might consider forgoing the holiday party and instead having an optional potluck during lunch one day in order to free up money for the holiday bonus budget.

Usually employees are put into about three categories: lower-level, mid-level, and upper-level. The level depends on position, length of employment, and performance throughout the year. Each level should receive a different spending limit per employee.

If you are buying for a large number of employees, Gifttree.com has a corporate sales department and would be able to assist in finding the right gifts for each employee category. They could also assist in finding personalized, custom gifts for your most important clients.

If your budget is much lower this year, you might consider giving a gift or a combination of a gift and a check. A lower-level gift might be a monogrammed coffee mug and gourmet snacks. A mid-level gift might include a bottle of wine and a check for the cost of a one night stay at a nearby resort. An upper-level gift could be a gift basket and a check that could be used for a vacation.

For more ideas, you could interview one person from each level to find out what they think might be a good gift. However, be wary of purchasing gift cards. Most gift cards have hidden maintenance fees that can detract from the card value if it isn’t used by a certain amount of time. Often times a gift card cannot be replaced if it is lost or stolen. Also, the gift card could become worthless if you purchase it from a company that goes out of business.
