Earth Hour Alert - 60 Minutes of Gas Guzzling Fleets

Canadian cleantech entrepreneur, the maker of Canada's first all electric SUV, calculates startling costs and environmental damage unleashed by fuel-burning fleets By converting gas-guzzling fleets to run modular all-electric drive systems environmental damage can be reduced exponentially… ... imagine the benefits every hour of every day!
March 25, 2010 – Across Canada, some two million fleet vehicles make daily runs for utilities, municipalities and businesses.   In advance of Earth Hour on March 27, one Canadian cleantech entrepreneur has calculated the startling costs and environmental damage being done by these fuel-burning fleets, as well as the compelling upside to converting combustion engines found in light trucks and SUVs to all-electric, zero emission systems.

“Every 60 minutes, two million gas-guzzling fleet vehicles consume more than half-a-million litres of gasoline,” says Jay Giraud, CEO of Vancouver’s Rapid Electric Vehicles (REV).  “While Canadians do everything they can to reduce their personal environmental footprint, fleets have been slow to recognize the new all-electric possibilities.”

It’s not just fleet fuel costs that are significant.  Fleet vehicle emissions are equally shocking.  Using a Canadian fleet favorite as the example – a 4-cylinder 2009 Ford Escape that travels 24,000 km per year – Giraud paints a grim ecological picture.

“Using figures from the US EPA, those two million fleet vehicles also emit more than 1,500 metric tonnes of green house gases (CO2 - carbon dioxide) per hour,” Giraud calculates.  “Additionally, seven metric tons of carbon monoxide (CO) is also released into the air, along with a cocktail of 500kg of NOx, non-methane organic compounds and particulate matter.  All of these contribute to smog and a significant degradation of the air we breathe.”

REV is a leading Canadian innovator with a patent-pending Modular Drive System technology that can quickly transform inefficient, high emission light duty trucks and SUVs into ultra-clean and efficient all-electric vehicles.  The company's first production vehicle was an electrified Ford Escape called the REV ACX2.

The REV ACX2 boasts an all-electric drive train with 25 kWh of lithium-ion battery, a 100-120 kilometre range per charge (with 160-180 range in sight) and smart grid connectivity.  Once electrified, the SUV features increased horsepower, a top speed of 125 km/h and 100 per cent elimination of tail pipe emissions.

By displacing fleet fuel and combustion engine maintenance costs, and significantly reducing environmental impact, REV’s all-electric system delivers impressive net climate savings…not just for Earth Hour but for the continuing benefit of the planet 24/7 365.
