Washington D.C: A successful briefing session about the upcoming Gauteng Global City Summit was attended by a select audience at Wits Business School on the 07 March 2006. The purpose of the briefing was to attract a core group of thought leaders and investors to design and deliver the 1-day Summit.

Wits Faculty of Commerce, Law & Management will collaborate with Deloitte, the Human Capital Institute, and The University of Johannesburg´s Human Resources Department to host the 1-day Summit in Johannesburg at its Parktown campus (Wits Business School & P&DM) on 28 September 2006.

Patrick FitzGerald (Prof.), Dean Wits Faculty Of Commerce, Law & Management chaired the briefing session. Prof. Francis Antonie, Director of the Graduate School of Public & Development Management (P&DM), Allan Schweyer, Executive Director HCI (Global), Dr Henry Grimbeek, Nissan S.A & David Conradie of Deloitte, discussed the relevance and timeliness of the Summit. Jeff Sacht Director HCI Southern Africa introduced the role that HCI would play to orchestrate a public-private partnering towards delivering a successful Gauteng Global City Summit.

The theme for the Summit will be "Securing Gauteng's Talent Base To Become A World Class & Globally Competitive City Region: Issues, Opportunities & A Way Forward To 2010"

The Summit will bring together leaders from industry, academia, government, labour and the media to develop a clearer understanding of their role in ensuring that the Gauteng Global City Region is equipped to become a vibrant world city with a vigorous economy. The summit will launch year-long activities and project teams to better position the Global City Region´s economy to acquire, develop, retain and leverage the talent required to attract investment, and deliver business, civic and social results as the Global City Region approaches 2010.

The primary challenges faced by Gauteng´s business and political leaders in this, and the coming decades will be to improve living standards and business opportunities in the face of increased, and simultaneous competition from other Global City Regions throughout the world.

The City Summit will be a high profile, very positive and innovative event. The multi-campus event will allow for an interactive live simulcast between the Parktown venue and an audience at The University of Johannesburg. Thought leadership, sponsorship opportunities, and local media partnerships will ensure a high level of pre- and post event coverage as will the ongoing nature of the yearlong initiatives that will flow from the Summit.
