Findley Davies and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Discuss Health Care Reform

Findley Davies partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (the Chamber) to host an audio conference on "Health Care Reform Updates".
Toledo, OH - December 18, 2009.    Findley Davies partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (the Chamber) to host an audio conference on "Health Care Reform Updates". The audio conference, held on Thursday, December 10, 2009, was moderated by Bruce Davis, National Practice Leader of Findley Davies' Health and Group Benefits practice. The featured speaker for the event was Katie Hays, Executive Director of the Congressional and Public Affairs Division of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. As part of Findley Davies' mission to provide objective insight into legislative developments, the Firm worked with Ms. Hays to provide an insider's view on what is transpiring in the House and Senate.

The audio conference brought together key executives from multiple industries and regions around the United States. Ms. Hays' presentation provided:

According to Ms. Hays, the Chamber's top three concerns with regard to the current health care reform proposals are "the creation of a government-run health plan, new benefit mandates for employers, and new taxes on employers and small business owners."

Ms. Hays addressed the alternative to the Public Option, which involves an expansion of Medicare to 55 - 64 year olds. In addition, Ms. Hays discussed whether the House and Senate will hold a traditional conference to revise the Senate bill, or if it will be rubberstamped by the House for quick passage to the President.

Despite the sense of urgency, Ms. Hays enforced the idea that it is not too late to weigh in on the debate. Ms. Hays states, "Some Senators are not ready for a final bill yet. They are paying attention to employers and public sentiment." She encouraged participants to reach out any way they can to voice their concerns, including calling and emailing Congressmen, writing letters to the editor of local newspapers, and talk radio opportunities. In addition, the Chamber's website, www.voteforbusiness.com, allows individuals to voice their opinions and concerns online, via letters and emails sent directly to Congress.

There is speculation that a bill will be passed in time for the President's State of the Union Address in January. In response, Findley Davies and the Chamber will host a follow up audio conference early in 2010 to discuss updates on actions taken by Congress over the next few weeks.
