PHILADELPHIA, PA – April 29, 2010 – Despite the sluggish economy, as many as three-quarters of employees in North America feel secure in their jobs, according to a new survey by Right Management. In fact, 38% claim to feel “very secure.” Right Management is the talent and career management expert within Manpower, the global leader in employment services.

The firm analyzed responses from more than 1,300 individuals throughout North America via an online poll conducted during March in partnership with LinkedIn®.

“The widespread sense of job security is based on a couple of factors.  One, a result of managers doing a good job helping employees to understand their role in the organization and how they can make a difference – both today and in the future,” said Melvin Scales, Senior Vice President at Right Management. “Two, the economy is growing, job openings are improving and the stock market is recovering.  Employees may believe perhaps the worst is over.”

“The findings suggest that employees may think that if they have survived by this point then they’re in pretty good positions to keep their jobs, notes Scales. “The good news is that given the big changes companies have endured in the past year employees are proving to be amazingly resilient and confident about the future.”

Among key findings:

·         Employees at medium-sized organizations feel the most secure, with 42% reporting they feel “very secure.”
·         Men (27%) feel slightly less secure than women (22%).
·         40% of management-level employees feel “very secure” – more than any other group.
·         26% of employees do not feel secure at work.

“Creating a culture of trust goes a long way to fostering a sense of security in the workplace,” advised Scales. ”Leaders who take the time to talk with employees about what is happening within the company can help them to understand what is expected of them and show that they are valued and respected. A sense of security founded on trust is what’s needed to build a creative and innovative environment.”

Scales noted that the research findings present heartening news for employees and employers alike. “For those employees who have weathered the restructurings, cutbacks and downsizings, it’s evident that they have a clear understanding of what they contribute and how they add value. Their confidence is strong. And provided confidence doesn’t breed complacency, but rather ideas and innovation, employers will benefit from a highly-engaged and secure workforce.”

Right Management surveyed 1,310 individuals via an online poll on LinkedIn® conducted between March 12 and March 30, 2010.
