Dr. Alan Middleton Workplace Literacy and Learning Award Debuts with Call for Nominations

New national award recognizing excellence in workplace literacy, Inaugural winner to be honoured at new Life Literacy Night in October

Nominees can reflect individual employees, management, union, government and literacy professionals involved in workplace literacy and essential skills. A selection committee of ABC Life Literacy Canada officials and workplace literacy advisors will evaluate all submissions and select a winner based on criteria including the individual’s community impact in the area of workplace literacy and essential skills, commitment, and leadership to workplace literacy.
 
The winner will be awarded on October 6, 2010 as part of ABC Life Literacy Canada’s new Life Literacy Night. The event will combine other annual awards including the Peter Gzowski Literacy Award of Merit and The Honourable Joyce Fairbairn, P.C. Literacy Public Awareness Award.
Toronto, ON – May 25, 2010 - ABC Life Literacy Canada is pleased to announce that its call for nominations to the Dr. Alan Middleton Workplace Literacy and Learning Award is now open. This national award will recognize an individual for their outstanding achievement in increasing workplace literacy and essential skills in their community. The honour was established to recognize the outstanding contribution of ABC Life Literacy Canada board member and former Chair, Dr. Alan Middleton - a true champion for literacy.
“I am truly honoured to be affiliated with this award recognizing excellence in workplace literacy and learning,” says Dr. Middleton, the Executive Director of the Schulich Executive Education Centre at York University. “Low literacy has far-reaching implications for Canada’s businesses and economy and honours like these help set the stage for this solution to improved skills and training.”

About Dr. Alan Middleton, PhD:
Dr. Alan Middleton is currently the Executive Director of the Schulich Executive Education Centre at York University, and past chair of ABC Life Literacy Canada. He has over 35 years experience in advertising and marketing, including President of Amca Marketing Inc., President and CEO of JWT Japan, and Executive Vice President of J. Walter Thompson Company. He has taught worldwide and has been a longtime literacy advocate.
 
Dr. Alan Middleton joined the Board of ABC Life Literacy Canada in 2001 and became Chair in 2003. Under his leadership, ABC Life Literacy Canada developed a new strategic plan and direction and significantly enhanced its role as a leader in adult and workplace literacy. As a communications organization, ABC Life Literacy Canada benefited enormously from Alan’s strategic marketing expertise. As a champion of workplace education, Alan also instituted new publications for ABC Life Literacy Canada, Canadian CEO and Training Matters, now inserted in Canadian Business magazine, to promote the benefits of workplace education to employers.
