Arlington, VA – In response to philanthropy’s growing commitment to inclusive practices and diversity in philanthropic decision-making, the Council on Foundations is launching the “Career Pathways Program.” Pathways is a premiere leadership development program aimed at recruiting and retaining diverse and excellent leadership in philanthropy’s most senior levels.

Through an intensive one-year networking and targeted skill-building program, Pathways seeks to prepare candidates from diverse backgrounds to successfully achieve positions in philanthropic leadership.

“There is an inextricable link between diversity, inclusiveness, and effectiveness in philanthropy,” said Steve Gunderson, president and CEO of the Council on Foundations. “Cultivating top-notch, diverse leadership is a critical component of a thriving, sustainable philanthropic community.”

The leadership preparation program is open to individuals from diverse backgrounds who are currently employed in foundations and grantmaking institutions. For its inaugural class, Pathways will invite nine to twelve individuals from diverse backgrounds who are working to attain senior-level positions in philanthropy.

The candidates selected for the program will participate in three small-group learning sessions, each over the course of a couple of days, facilitated by expert faculty representing senior executives and trustees in the field of philanthropy, as well as in other fields. In addition to the in-person group gatherings, candidates will participate in self-directed career planning, one-on-one coaching, mentoring, and job shadowing opportunities. They will analyze and identify their individual leadership styles and traits and be exposed to a range of issues foundation executives face in their day-to-day work.

The Council expects to sustain the network of graduates of the program, bringing this emerging network of leaders from diverse backgrounds together at Council conferences and events.

“Access to networks and leadership opportunities are critical elements in the pathway to senior, executive, and trustee positions,” said Renée B. Branch, director of the Council on Foundations’ Diversity and Inclusiveness Practices. “Unlike traditional training or advocacy programs, Pathways focuses more intentionally on assisting candidates from diverse backgrounds in the development of networks and capacity to attain high-level, decision-making roles in philanthropy.”

The deadline for submitting applications to participate in the program is May 13, 2010. Program brochures and applications are available on the Council’s Web site at www.cof.org/diversity<http://vocuspr.vocus.com/VocusPR30/Url.aspx?525345x2855x300175>. A volunteer panel of grantmaking executives and trustees will review all applications, interview candidates, and make recommendations to the Council. The first Pathways session is scheduled for July 2010 in Arlington, VA.

The Career Pathways Program is made possible through a generous grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the California Wellness Foundation, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

Pathways is a part of the Council’s Diversity and Inclusive Practices, which aims to foster effective, sustained, and diverse leadership in America’s philanthropic sector.
