Mercer´s 2004 Multi-Outlet Retailer Compensation Survey includes compensation information from 132 mid-sized and large retail organizations. The pay data cover more than 1.3 million employees in 88 positions, ranging from top operations executive to sales specialist and shipper/receiver. By industry segment, the largest categories of participating organizations include specialty retailers (33%), grocery/supermarkets (14%), and eating/dining (12%).
According to Mercer´s survey, 2004 median total cash compensation (base pay and annual bonus) for a top operations executive is $246,800. The median total cash compensation for other executive positions is as follows:
-Top marketing/merchandiser executive $256,200
- Top distribution executive $229,500
-Divisional store operations executive $150,000
The survey also covers a range of management positions. For some of the most highly populated management jobs in the survey, pay is virtually flat with the exception of store manager, which rose from $40,900 in 2003 to $47,000 in 2004. (See Table 1: Pay for Select Retail Management Positions.)
Among the hourly positions included in the survey, dispatchers receive the highest median total cash compensation at $15.60/hour. Median pay for other hourly positions includes shipper/receiver ($11.50/hour), delivery driver ($8.50/hour), and cashier ($7.75/hour).
Regardless of the position, pay for jobs in the retail industry can vary by region and by the company mix within the region. A buyer or warehouse worker/equipment operator would receive higher compensation in the Southeast than in the Northeast, while a store manager would see the opposite in terms of pay. (See Table 2: Regional Pay Variations for Select Retail Positions.)
