Prescription Solutions named winner in URAC's Best Practices in Consumer Empowerment and Protection

Prescription Solutions wins the Silver medal in first-ever nationwide competition recognizing health management programs that empower, protect consumers
Washington, D.C. April 1, 2008 - URAC announced the winners of
its inaugural Best Practices in Consumer Empowerment and Protection
Awards competition March 25, naming Prescription Solutions as a Silver
medal winner in the Pharmacy Benefit Management category.  The awards
were presented at a black tie gala during URAC's Best Practices in
Consumer Empowerment and Protection Conference in Orlando, Fla.  During
the conference, award finalists presented their model programs to
attendees so these best practices can be duplicated in communities
across the country.

Prescription Solutions, a leading pharmacy benefit management
(PBM) company, received the Silver medal for its Geriatric RxMonitor
Program, which reduces the use of potentially inappropriate medications
in patients aged 65 years and older.

Studies indicate that up to 30 percent of hospital admissions in
the elderly are linked to medication toxicity and drug-related problems,
resulting in profound health, safety and economic consequences for the
elderly. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association
reported that people 65 years or older were more than twice as likely to
be treated in an ER for adverse drug events and nearly seven times as
likely to require hospitalization as those younger than 65.**

Prescription Solutions' Geriatric RxMonitor Program was
developed to improve patient safety by identifying members who might be
taking drugs that are not recommended for older adults, and promoting
providers' awareness of drugs to be avoided in the elderly, as
identified in the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set
(HEDIS) criteria. HEDIS is a measurement tool used broadly among
America's health plans to measure care and service performance.

More than 1.3 million seniors were screened for the Geriatric
RxMonitor Program. Within this group, more than one in ten (12.7
percent) were found to have at least one prescription claim for drugs to
be avoided in the elderly, or DAE. To let physicians know that their
patients were taking these drugs, Prescription Solutions contacted
providers via a mailing that included

* a notification letter with an explanation of the
program;

* patient-specific reports detailing the patients with
identified drug(s)    of concern, associated clinical issues(s);

* safer medication therapy management options; and

* a provider education piece on drugs and the elderly
that also included evidence-based recommendations.

The Geriatric RxMonitor Program was successful in resolving the
DAE situations for 65.7 percent of the approximately 70,000 members in
the program who were taking these drugs. Among members targeted for the
intervention, the number of DAE prescriptions dropped by 57 percent
post-intervention from 126,227 to 53,772. In addition, a 50 percent
decrease was seen with the DAE prescription costs as a result of fills
avoided (from $11.15 to $5.60 per targeted member per month).

"A Best Practices Award is a strong signal to the marketplace
that an organization places a premium on consumer protection and
empowerment," said Alan P. Spielman, URAC's president and CEO.  "We are
excited about this opportunity to recognize these trailblazers and draw
attention to programs that are models for the industry.

In all, URAC honored 22 winners for excellence among entries
from health care management, health information technology, health plan
and pharmacy benefit management organizations.  Entries were judged by a
distinguished panel of industry experts in three categories:  consumer
decision support, consumer/patient safety, and integrated care
coordination.  Programs were selected as winners for their ability to
measurably demonstrate an impact on consumer empowerment and/or
protection, as well as their potential for wide-spread implementation of
the program by other organizations.

"As people get older, they often take more prescription drugs,
which in turn increases their risk for a potential adverse drug
reaction," said Joseph Addiego, M.D., Chief Medical Officer,
Prescription Solutions. "The Geriatric RxMonitor Program is a clinical
intervention that reduces inappropriate medication use in the elderly,
and assists them in utilizing the drugs most appropriate for their
medical condition. With this program and other clinical initiatives,
Prescription Solutions is working to ensure that seniors are prescribed
the safest and most appropriate prescription medications so they can
lead healthier, more productive lives."
