SURVEY FINDS MORE WOMEN CALL EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS….

But Men Call More on a Number of Surprising Issues
Bensinger, DuPont & Associates (BDA), a national Employee Assistance Program provider, studied utilization trends for the first six months of 2007. During that time, 63% of the callers to the EAP were female and 37% of the callers were male.

“Women comprise less than half (46%) of the total U.S. labor force, according to the US Department of Labor, yet they make significantly more calls to the EAP.  In fact, overall women utilize EAP services more than males at almost a 3:1 ratio,” says Gus Stieber, of Bensinger DuPont & Associates.  “While we cannot pinpoint exactly why this happens, one explanation is that, overall, research has shown women are more likely than men to seek help for concerns related to mental health and well-being --- which are the traditional issues handled by EAPs.”

BDA’s survey dug deeper and compared the percentage of males versus females calling into the program for a specific problem type. While they discovered the 5.7% more females sought help from their EAP for mental health issues, BDA also unearthed some surprising results:

Couple Issues – 4.1% more males called into the EAP regarding couple issues than females.
Substance Abuse Issues – 6.7% more males called into the EAP regarding substance abuse issues than females.
Work Related Issues – 3.1% more males called into the EAP regarding work issues than females.

“This data is critical in helping employers map issues and potential trouble spots to the various groups within the employee population,” notes Stieber.  “Armed with this information, employers are better able to identify trends in EAP usage and provide strategies, programs and training targeted at problem areas for their workforce --- which, after all, is the goal of any effective EAP.”
