AWLP Announces 2007 Work-Life Innovative Excellence Award Recipients

Capital Metro Transportation Authority, Massachusetts General Hospital, United States Patent & Trademark Office recognized for outstanding work-life programs.

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWeb) February 6, 2007 -- Alliance for Work-Life Progress (AWLP), the leading not-for-profit professional work-life association, recently announced the recipients of its 2007 Work-Life Innovative Excellence Award. Capital Metro Transportation Authority (Austin, TX), United States Patent & Trademark Office (Washington, D.C.) and Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston, MA) are the 2007 honorees for implementing programs that enrich the lives of their employees while achieving organizational and business goals.

Capital Metro Transportation Authority – Created the “Capital Metro Wellness Program” consisting of a 24-hour fitness center, on-site child care and learning center with flexible hours priced 15 percent lower than other comparable local centers. Since its implementation in January 2003, absenteeism has dropped 44 percent and increases to the company’s health insurance premiums have been minimal — a direct result of helping employees be proactive in fighting obesity and reversing the trend of declining health.

Massachusetts General Hospital – Developed an employee wellness program called “Be Fit” to help employees live healthier lifestyles. This program incorporates healthy cafeteria meals, monthly nutrition seminars, meditation sessions, daily walks and discounted membership at the MGH-owned health club for groups of MGH employees. At the core of the program lies a 10-week nutrition and fitness curriculum where employees form teams and compete for awards. The Be Fit program has helped 748 employees realize a healthier lifestyle since its January 2005 inception.

United States Patent and Trademark Office – Established a “Trademark Work at Home” program for 220 of its examining attorneys who review trademark applications. The USPTO implemented the program to attract and retain high quality staff, accommodate the space needs of a growing workforce and reduce commuter traffic. By incorporating measurable performance goals in the evaluation of worker performance, the USPTO has created a model of an extremely successful telecommuting program for government agencies.

Recipients will be honored at the 11th Annual Work-Life Conference & Exhibition, February 21-23 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Past Work-Life Innovative Excellence Award recipients have included: American Business Collaboration, AT&T, City of Honolulu, GlaxoSmithKline, IBM, University of California – Davis, Marriott, Sun Microsystems, U.S. Army and Verizon Wireless.
