Understanding the Social Security Debate: A Series of No-cost Seminars for Journalists around the Country

The nation is now launched on the most important domestic debate in decades: whether to change Social Security. To help journalists understand and evaluate various Social Security proposals, the National Press Foundation is conducting a series of half-day seminars at several regional sites in collaboration with the National Academy of Social Insurance.

Designed to inform in a balanced and interesting way, but not to advocate any specific viewpoint, the seminars will feature speakers recognized as national experts but with different and sometimes conflicting perspectives. Speakers include:

William J. Arnone, partner, Human Capital Practice at Ernst & Young

Laurel Beedon, senior policy advisor, AARP Public Policy Institute

David John, research fellow, The Heritage Foundation

Tim Kane, Bradley Fellow in Labor Policy, The Heritage Foundation

Maya Rockeymoore, vice president, The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation

Robert Rosenblatt, senior fellow at the National Academy of Social Insurance

Each program will look at the fundamentals of Social Security, examine how government programs fit into retirement as a whole, and include a debate on the merits of including some version of private accounts in the Social Security system. The seminars will be held from 9 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. at each location. Seminars will be held:

There is no cost, but reservations are required. The program is designed with plenty of time for questions and answers and everything is on-the-record. To attend, you must be employed as a print, broadcast or online journalist, or be an active freelancer. Journalism students will also be admitted on a space- available basis. A light breakfast will be served, but attendees are otherwise responsible for their own lodging, travel and meals.
