Toronto (December 7, 2006)— Today the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario (HRPAO) released results of a survey of its members regarding the end of mandatory retirement and its impact on Canadian business. The research concludes that the majority of HR professionals support the new law and are prepared for the legislative changes.
Key findings:
3 of 4 HR professionals surveyed support the abolishment of mandatory retirement
7 of 10 companies surveyed are already prepared or are making the necessary arrangements to accommodate the legislative changes regarding mandatory retirement
Companies are considering a variety of initiatives, such as job modifications for mature workers, to best respond to the new regulations
The HRPAO study surveyed 173 human resources professionals in Ontario and is representative of all sectors, industries and company sizes. More detailed results can be found at http://www.hrpao.org/hrpao/retirement.
“As the thought leader in human resource management, HRPAO recognizes the importance of effective talent management,” said HRPAO CEO, Bill Greenhalgh. “One way to improve organizational effectiveness is to allow experienced workers, who might otherwise have been forced to retire, to stay on in the workforce and further contribute to their company’s success. We are encouraged to see that the HR community is well-prepared for this significant change in employment legislation. The end of mandatory retirement is the start of a new era in talent management,” he said.
About Mandatory Retirement Legislation
The Ending Mandatory Retirement Statute Law Amendment Act, 2005 was passed in December 2005 and will take effect on December 12, 2006. Once established, the law will amend the Ontario Human Rights Code to protect people aged 65 and over from age discrimination for most employment purposes.
