WASHINGTON (May 9, 2007) – Unum (NYSE: UNM) today received a 2007 Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles award from the National Business Group on Health, a national non-profit organization of large employers.
Unum was honored with a Gold Award presented by the Business Group’s Institute on the Costs and Health Effects of Obesity. The award reflects Unum’s commitment and dedication to combating obesity and promoting a healthy lifestyle for its employees. It is the second time Unum has received this recognition.
“The core principal of Unum’s integrated healthcare strategy is to enable and encourage employees to maintain and improve their health,” says Eileen Farrar, senior vice president of human resources. “We offer employees and their families a broad range of resources and educational programs that promote wellness and improve healthy behaviors. Such awareness helps both employees and Unum as a corporation manage the skyrocketing costs of health care.”
Unum aims to be employees’ principal source for tools, programs and resources that support individual efforts to use healthcare effectively and efficiently. These goals are achieved through:
· Health Resource Centers (HRCs) at main campuses that provide health coaching and wellness services. They are the principal source for education, programs, activities and other resources that help support employees’ efforts to maintain health, identify or reduce health risks, or manage effectively a chronic illness. In addition to providing health coaching, nurses at each HRC provide limited medical assistance including conducting health screenings and administering flu and allergy shots.
· Health-conscious food choices at the company’s four cafeterias. Developing awareness about nutrition has helped stimulate employee demand for healthy meal choices. Healthy choices are also available in vending machines.
· Partnership with the company’s health care insurer, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, to provide a Health Management Tool that provides a personalized and confidential report to each employee about their health. The health risk assessment helps employees and their doctors determine the potential risks for certain medical conditions and identifies ways to improve health.
· A comprehensive communications strategy dedicated to educating employees about the company’s benefit programs and stressing the importance of physical activity and good nutrition. In addition to explaining the health resources provided by the company, Unum communicates how employees can improve their health as well as help mitigate the effects of rising health care.
· Other programs and services including on-site fitness facilities at four company locations; a 24-hour help and baby benefits nurse line; an employee assistance program with a variety of information on health-related topics; and periodic campaigns focused on weight reduction, physical activity and overall well-being.
“We are very pleased to honor Unum for their support and dedication to providing lifestyle improvement programs designed to reduce obesity and promote healthier lifestyles for their employees,” said Helen Darling, President of the Business Group. “As a leader in the employee benefits industry, Unum knows the importance of supporting their employees’ efforts to choose a healthier way of life.”
Now in its third year, the Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles awards acknowledge and reward those employers that recognize the urgent need to improve their workers’ health, productivity and quality of life. The underlying goal of the program is to serve as a catalyst to encourage all employers to take action.
