(Washington, D.C.) - Today, Director of U.S. National Drug Control Policy, John P. Walters, announced that he will travel to Ottawa, Canada to meet with Canadian officials, and to deliver keynote remarks at a luncheon organized by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) on Thursday, February 22, 2007.  CCSA provides objective, evidence-based information and advice aimed at reducing the health, social, and economic impact caused by substance abuse and addictions.

Director Walters’ remarks will highlight the 23 percent reduction in youth drug use in the United States since 2001, and the balanced approach of prevention, treatment, and enforcement that has contributed to this success.  Director Walters will also recognize Canada’s successful efforts to control the flow of methamphetamine precursors such as pseudoephedrine, and its close partnership with the United States to cooperatively address our shared border threats.
