UNITED STATES “DRUG CZAR” THANKS CANADA FOR RENEWED FOCUS ON ILLICIT DRUG ABUSE & TRAFFICKING

PLEDGES TO ENHANCE U.S.-CANADIAN COOPERATION
(Washington, D.C.) - Today, Director of National Drug Control Policy, John P. Walters, traveled to Canada’s capital to discuss the United States’ National Drug Control Strategy, as well as to highlight the shared experiences and common challenges facing the United States and Canada in their fight against illicit drug abuse and trafficking.  While in Ottawa, Director Walters met with Canadian governmental and non-governmental leaders, and presented a keynote address at a luncheon organized by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA).

“Over the past five years, we successfully pushed back against illicit drug use through a comprehensive strategy of prevention, treatment and law enforcement,” stated Director John P. Walters.  “Overall youth drug use has dropped by 23 percent since 2001, with marijuana use declining by 25 percent and methamphetamine use down a staggering 50 percent.  Only through our balanced approach were we able to achieve these goals, and keep approximately 840,000 youth off drugs and out of harm’s way.  I hope that our success in pushing back against illicit drugs in the United States offers inspiration to those who falsely believe it is impossible to make real, measurable progress against drug abuse.”

While in Ottawa, Director Walters participated in meetings with his ministerial counterparts in Canada, including productive exchanges with senior officials from Health Canada, the Public Safety Ministry, the Department of Justice, the Foreign Ministry, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.  This was Director Walters' first trip to Canada in over two years, and the first since the new Canadian government took office.

“Canada has always been a friend and partner of the United States, and I hope my trip underscores our deep-seeded commitment and friendship with the citizens and government of Canada.  The United States appreciates Canada’s renewed focus on disrupting organized criminal activity, and reducing illicit drug use and trafficking, and we pledge to work with the leadership in Ottawa in combating substance abuse, especially methamphetamine abuse, in order to build upon our already strong counter-narcotics and law enforcement relationship.”

During his remarks at the luncheon organized by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, Canada’s addiction agency, Director Walters discussed the success of the United States’ National Drug Control Strategy, and focused on ways the United States and Canada can work together to combat shared illicit drug concerns, including the production and trafficking of high-potency marijuana (BC Bud) on both sides of the border, the growth of Asian-dominated criminal trafficking organizations and outlaw biker gangs, and the production and trafficking of MDMA (ecstasy).

“The U.S. and Canada have a shared responsibility for our borders.  Just as trade and tourism cross our borders everyday, so can marijuana, meth, and other harmful substances aimed at our citizens and youth.  U.S-Canadian law enforcement cooperation has been essential in tightening our borders against illicit drugs, and it will continue to serve as a cornerstone of our joint strategy against illicit drugs while preserving the continued free flow of goods and people that are vital to both our nations.”
