Arnold Milstein, MD, chief physician and national health care thought
leader for Mercer Health & Benefits LLC, has been elected to membership
in the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
Established in 1970 as a unit of the National Academy of Sciences, the
IOM is concerned with the protection and advancement of the health
professions and sciences, the promotion of research and development
pertinent to health and the improvement of health care. Dr. Milstein is
the first benefits consultant to be tapped for IOM membership.
Dr. Milstein has a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard
University, an MD from Tufts University and a degree in health services
evaluation from the University of California at Berkeley. He is an
associate clinical professor at the University of California at San
Francisco and medical director of the Pacific Business Group on Health,
the largest US employer health care coalition.
Dr. Milstein also is co-founder of The Leapfrog Group, a voluntary
program among employers to encourage easy access to health care
information as well as an organization that recognizes hospitals that
have a proven record of high-quality care. In 2004 and 2005, Dr.
Milstein also won the highest annual award given by WorldatWork and the
National Business Group on Health, respectively.
