College Hiring Flat in May But Internships Tumble

In response to recent reports that job seekers are struggling to find jobs, CollegeRecruiter.com compiled lists of the five best and worst states for finding internships and entry level jobs. The data was gathered through a state-by-state search on the site; the lists will be updated every month to help students and entry level job candidates know how many opportunities are available to them and in which states. The results this month? Discouraging.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN, May 6, 2009 - In response to recent reports that job seekers are struggling to find jobs, CollegeRecruiter.com compiled lists of the five best and worst states for finding internships and entry level jobs. The data was gathered through a state-by-state search on the site; the lists will be updated every month to help students and entry level job candidates know how many opportunities are available to them and in which states. The results this month? Discouraging.

"We were very disappointed to see that almost every state, large and small, recorded significant decreases in the number of internships and were basically flat for entry-level job openings," said Steven Rothberg, Founder of CollegeRecruiter.com job board. "The lower internship numbers in May are a real setback given that April's numbers were up substantially and the summer is now upon us. It appears that many employers likely found the interns they needed or were confident they would be able to do so without having to advertise their openings. Fortunately for this year's graduates, however, it appears that the entry-level market has stabilized."

The states with the largest number of internship and entry-level job listings on CollegeRecruiter.com in May are available at
http://www.CollegeRecruiter.com/press-room/economic-indictors/college-hiring-flat-in-may-but.

Sparsely populated states have the smallest number of internship and entry-level job listings on CollegeRecruiter.com. They are available at
http://www.CollegeRecruiter.com/press-room/economic-indictors/college-hiring-flat-in-may-but.

Other states with a lot of internships and entry-level jobs are:

 - Ohio - 696 internships (up 10percent from 634 in April) and 4,188 entry level jobs (up eight percent from 3,895 in April)

- New Jersey - 602 internships (up 18 percent from 511 in April) and 3,721 entry level jobs (up four percent from 3,586 in April); and

- Georgia - 501 internships (up 16 percent from 431 in April) and 3,096 entry level jobs ( up five percent from 2,961 in April).

The metro area with the largest number of postings again was the Washington, D.C. area, including Maryland and Virginia, with 10,478 combined listings. That's virtually unchanged from the 10,421 combined listings in March.

In addition to job and internship postings, CollegeRecruiter.com also has numerous blogs at
http://www.CollegeRecruiter.com/weblogs where job seekers and students can find useful hints and tips for how to manage their careers or job searches, how to write winning resumes and cover letters, or how to prepare and pay for college.
