Human Resources: “Lights-Camera-You’re Hired!” Think ‘Summer-Blockbuster’ When Looking For A New Job.

Graber suggests that you use some of the proven “hooks” that Hollywood uses to increase your chances of getting noticed in the job market. “Use kinetic terminology whenever possible,” he said, “and include a professional review if you have one.”

Graber noted that a cover letter that has a complimentary statement from a former employer can be very powerful. “It is human nature to put great stock in a third-party opinion. It’s the equivalent of a thumbs-up from a movie critic.”

Mr. Graber also suggests judicious use of action-oriented words to describe projects you have worked on such as, “spear-headed” or “innovated” or “conceptualized” which can go a lot farther than “led” or “implemented” or “thought of” when you are trying to motivate a reader.

“Of course, the key is not to go overboard,” cautions Graber. “No hiring professional is going to respond favorably to a string of unrelated superlatives no matter how ‘boffo’ you think you are.”
