Identifying great candidates usually starts with an impressive resume, but that only provides part of the story. To gain more insight into a candidate’s past performance, a scientifically valid and objective assessment is needed to provide a fuller picture. Human resource professionals can select more “A” players by using scientifically validated surveys created by industrial psychologists that leverage feedback from references. By discovering what previous managers and colleagues openly say about a candidate’s strengths, weaknesses and behaviors, “A” players can be selected 90% of the time!

Learn how automated online reference-checking has introduced a way to capture behavioral feedback from five references in two days for each job candidate. Also, see a demonstration of how this software infuses consistency, reliability and validity, and how to identify which candidates display the characteristics of an “A” player.

Did you know that within the first 48 hours of your employees attending a traditional training or learning event, their knowledge retention drops to 33 percent? Did you also know that research now shows that nearly 80 percent of learning in the workplace takes place informally? So why are training departments still spending the vast majority of their budgets on formal training efforts? Informal Learning has become all the rage over the past 5 years in the Learning and Development industry. As we’ve taken a closer look at this powerful discipline we’ve learned that Informal learning can actually be “formalized”, tracked, measured, and implemented through Performance Support. This session will address the methodologies behind designing, implementing, and maintaining effective Performance Support (learning while doing), and how it is now, more than ever, all around us!

This session will provide a background on how lean thinking and tools can help safety and any HR function. Following the teachings of W. Edwards Deming, Toyota created a production system, now commonly referred to as lean production. What is not well understood is that “lean” works in any office and business, regardless of size. Whether healthcare, small enterprise, food service, or non – profit, “lean” can help improve teamwork, culture and drive continuous improvement, but only if we go back to basics and strip away the mystery that this thinking is only for the manufacturing floor. Participants in the session will gain new insight into both “how” and “why” standards should be developed.

How often have you hired someone with a great track record who turned out to be a bad hire? By discovering what a candidate’s previous managers and colleagues candidly say about their work style, skills and behaviors, you can objectively assess the candidate’s ability to be a top performer. Through this session, you will learn how technology has introduced a way for talent acquisition professionals to capture behavioral feedback from five references in just two days for each job candidate, and how to avoid candidates who score low with references. Also, see an overview of how this technology infuses compliance, consistency, reliability and validity into each reference-check and obtains feedback that identifies developmental needs of candidates.

Departing employees continue to walk away with sensitive employer information when they resign or are fired. Often times the employee uses a planned approach to take the information and uses it in a competing venture or new job. What can employers do to prevent this type of theft? This presentation will address the suggested policies and procedures employers should use from day one of the employment relationship through the departure. These range from confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements to non-compete/non-solicitation agreements. The presentation will also address practical solutions employers can use to protect proprietary information.

Though no policy or agreement is foolproof there are definite steps that should be considered to thwart the former employee and avoid having to go to the courthouse.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a New two page Form I-9 on March 8, 2013. This Form can be used immediately, but will be mandatory as of May 7, 2013. DHS gave employers very little time to make this administrative change, which can be especially challenging for employers that have several people responsible for this function through many different field offices.

This session will review the new Form in detail, and will also review the most common errors based on the new form, including how to correct errors made on the Form.. The initiation of a new form is also an excellent time to review all I-9 policies, including whether to make copies of supporting documents, how to process remote hires and rehires, when to reverify in Section 3, and how long to retain I-9 Forms. The speaker will provide practical solutions, especially for those employers that continue to rely on paper I-9s.
