In this session, HR Options will review the four most common employment options available to US/International companies looking to use workers across a border, such as in Canada. There are essentially four ways to legally hire workers:
  1. Direct hiring
  2. Third Party Employment offered through staffing firms and HR organizations
  3. Professional Employer Organizations
  4. Independent Contractors

Our discussion will include a review of the associated benefits and common pitfalls of each employment option so you can evaluate when each method is of use for your organization. We will also look at steps to become an employer in a new country, using Canada as a case study, as well as the distinction between a Third Party Employer versus a PEO, and how to properly classify Independent Contractors.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a New two page Form I-9 on March 8, 2013. This Form can be used immediately, but will be mandatory as of May 7, 2013. DHS gave employers very little time to make this administrative change, which can be especially challenging for employers that have several people responsible for this function through many different field offices.

This session will review the new Form in detail, and will also review the most common errors based on the new form, including how to correct errors made on the Form.. The initiation of a new form is also an excellent time to review all I-9 policies, including whether to make copies of supporting documents, how to process remote hires and rehires, when to reverify in Section 3, and how long to retain I-9 Forms. The speaker will provide practical solutions, especially for those employers that continue to rely on paper I-9s.

Are you planning, in the midst of implementing, or evaluating the success of an RPO engagement?

Before you go any further spend an hour with us as we review how to insure success or redefine your next contract. You will also find ways to communicate your on-going success and defend against those managers that are roadblocks. Additionally let’s review the cost and cycle time impacts that may influence your ability to gain true quality in candidate submissions and hires. This session will discuss lessons learned and the key pitfalls in any recruitment engagement but specifically how to make a full RPO engagement successful in both the short-term adoption and long-term stability of the program.

This session will focus on inhibitor/enablers from which to provide greater use and value from assembled talent, leverage HR resources, lower risk, and predictive decision making with better outcomes. HR can now provide real-time, actionable data for more reliable forecasting of costs and resource utilization for executive decision makers. We are not focusing on improving RPO, ATS or other similar HR technologies, though there is certainly room for improvement of all components of the applicable HRIS.

Many decision makers are unsure how this will help manage and grow their business -- especially with all the uncertainty of higher taxes and global geo-political conflicts. We are unable to control geo-political issues, let alone our own Congress. After years of waiting, can you really afford to wait more years to grow your business? Yes, there is risk, but if it can be measured it can be managed.

Innovative, powerful, and affordable devices have empowered technologically savvy consumers of HR Technology. They have expect much more than what the HR Tech industry has provided to date. Information is king and simple, on-demand delivery is paramount. These facts have become a major contributor in the acquisitions/mergers of Talent Management vendors by many of the larger ERP providers. These transactions in the HR Technology arena will affect us all in some way. The opportunity for major and rapid innovation is there. So is the ability to bring industry innovation to a crawl. Based on ERP history, many HR leaders expect it to take years before these transactions affect them directly - That would be a poor assumption and may prove to be costly. From the cloud to integrations; from mobile to social to the measureable. We will highlight what you really need to know.

In this session, I’m going to give you the secret to victoriously attracting and retaining Gen Y workers. If you have a current RPO engagement, I would go to your provider and demand that they put together a plan that addresses the unique needs of this generation. If you are considering moving to a RPO model – that could still be a very wise and cost effective decision (especially in light of the secrets I’m going to share with you today). Just make sure that the provider you select has some idea of what the new recruitment strategies will look like to get you the very best talent. If you are considering a RPO model, get this information first before approaching any providers!

The contracting of HR services and products has become easier but more complex. How is that possible? There are so many providers to select from and very easy to get into the marketplace. However navigating the scoring of functional value, fit of partnership, business case validation of cost and change management have now placed a lot of work on HR. No longer will procurement / strategic sourcing send out an RFP and give you the top three bidders with the lowest cost basis and have you select the correct provider for your company. And it is rarely appropriate to short list only best in class as it may not be best fit for your organization. Spend time with us as we discuss how to create a positive environment for the evaluation and selection of HR providers.

To avoid bad hiring decisions, employers have increasingly turned to background screening as a risk management tool. But, no screening program should be conducted without a full understanding of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), discrimination and privacy laws, the ADA, and a host of state-specific rules. Even credit reports, criminal records and social network sites are impacted by EEOC and ADA considerations. Examine federal and state laws to ensure legal compliance of your organization’s practices. Participants will discover new and existing state laws that have an effect on background checks as well as International considerations when implementing a Safe Hiring program. Topics will include the offshoring of Personal Identifiable Information (PII), required state-by-state Disclosure and Consent language, and the use of criminal record information in the hiring process. In addition, setting up a policy for background checks will be discussed as well as what to do when a report comes back with seemingly derogatory information (when candidates are turned down because of a background check certain notices are required).
