Cake or Carrots? Understanding How Incentives Motivate Healthy Choices
Incentives have been shown to motivate behavior change, yet there is a widening gap between those of us who use incentives to encourage healthy behavior and those of us who prefer not to provide rewards to encourage healthy behavior. In this seminar we’ll discuss what incentives are good for, and also the limitation of incentive-based programs.

This seminar will focus on understanding motivation. Motivation is the key to behavior change. And incentives are great at changing motivation. But some incentives have a lasting impact, and other incentives don’t. Some incentives are great at getting people started, and others are not. You’ll learn how to understand different types of incentives and how they can be used to not only motivate initial behavior change, but also to create sustainable change.

Incentive-based programs have a place in every wellness strategy. But they’re only one piece of the puzzle. And when used properly, they are an incredibly powerful piece. We’ll discuss how to leverage the engagement that incentive programs provide and where they fit into a larger wellness strategy.

This session will focus on three main concepts. First we’ll explain natural versus artificial incentives. Each type of incentive is useful to motivate different types of behaviors. Second, we’ll discuss intrinsic and extrinsic motivations to illustrate how people are motivated to change behaviors. This is really important because the whole point of wellness programs is to motivate positive health behaviors.

Lastly, we’ll discuss how and when it is appropriate to integrate different types of incentive strategies into your wellness program.
