Substance Abuse and Substance Abuse Prevention at the Worksite
Substance Abuse and Substance Abuse Prevention at the Worksite

This presentation focuses on and addresses the issue of substance abuse and substance abuse prevention in the workplace. Worksites today often encompass at least four generations of workers. Each generation has its own beliefs and values when it comes to the use of alcohol and drugs.

The issue of substance use, misuse and abuse in the workplace takes on increasing importance today as the pace of life and change continues to escalate. Alcohol and drugs are clearly used as coping mechanisms. Recent data is reporting an increase in the use of alcohol and drugs by older Americans and it is well established that younger workers are more risk prone when it comes to alcohol and drugs.

Employers are not immune from the costs and problems associated with substance use and abuse. Research has shown that 75% of illicit drug users are employed and an estimated 15% of the American workforce has consumed alcohol either before or during work, or has arrived at work hung-over.

This program will examine both the issue of substance abuse and how nine individual substance abuse prevention strategies can be integrated into a comprehensive worksite prevention framework and how this framework might be applied at worksites of varying sizes. Participants will be introduced to each strategy and will be shown where to locate appropriate resources for that strategy. The nine strategies are:
Policy development
Awareness and education
Programming resources
Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral and Treatment (SBIRT)
Worksite Testing
Employee Assistance Programs
Environmental supports
Substance abuse health insurance benefits
Hosting - liability issues
