Heart disease is currently the biggest killer in the world. According to the World Health Organisation in 2008 it killed over 7 million people or 1 person every 4.5 seconds. In the same year cardiovascular illness was responsible for killing 29% of all Canadians and over 40% of the deaths in Europe. Heart disease alone kills 1 in 4 people in the US.

Several studies have pointed out links between stress at work, absenteeism, lower productivity and presenteeism. This has been shown to affect team performance and morale.

According to a 2008, 12 year study of 10,308 London-based civil servants, chronic work stress was found to increase the risk of Coronary Heat Disease by 68% and is higher in employees under 50 years of age. This study also found that work stress was also associated with further poor health behaviours that could compound the risk.

A 5 year study amongst 12,000 Nurses found that stress at work could increase the chances of developing Ischaemic Heart Disease by up to 60%.

An analysis of 25 studies on the subject of work and heart stress has found that work place stress can increase the risk of Coronary Heart Disease between 2 – 6 times.

Whilst diet and exercise are targeted as the key interventions by many organisations, there is still a huge gap in our understanding of this disease and the role that work plays in it.
