The Freak Factory: Making Employees Better by Helping Them Get Worse
Are you frustrated by disengaged and unproductive employees? Are you disenchanted with existing methods of performance management? Do you wish you had better strategies for improving employee engagement and productivity?

Research shows that most people are not committed to their jobs. In some studies, more than 60% of workers are not engaged at work. Up to 66% of employees are actively looking for another job or fantasizing about starting their own business. So what should you do?

Unfortunately, the way we currently manage employees does even more to harm, instead of help, their performance. Specifically, we identify people's weaknesses and create plans to fix those weaknesses. Our performance evaluations and improvement plans focus on remediating flaws. This approach is frustrating and demoralizing to everyone involved. That is why managers list annual reviews as their most disliked task.

The problem is our perspective. We think our employees are broken, treat them like they are broken, and then wonder why they don’t work.

There is a better way. Instead of attacking people’s weaknesses, we need to find the strength that is hidden inside their apparently negative characteristics. We need to see that employee weaknesses are just strengths in disguise.

It is time to stop trying to create well-rounded and balanced employees. We need people that are unbalanced. We need freaks.

This session will explore eight unconventional strategies for improving employee engagement and productivity by turning our teams, departments and organizations into freak factories.

We'll also complete an assessment that shows you how your strengths and weaknesses are connected, and demonstrate how to use this assessment to better understand your employees and improve their performance.
