I'd also recommend Workforce Management (workforce.com) and SHRM (shrm.org) for best practices and a couple textbooks entitled Employment Law for Human Resource Practice ( Walsh) and Human Resource Champions (Ulrich). |

I'd suggest starting with a complete HR Audit. This will help identify what systems/procedures/processes are already in place and where your greatest gaps are. This process will help to organize/prioritize the essential tasks. I'd be happy to send you a sample audit tool that I've used (I am on my third HR department startup). You can send me an email at hr@lmconsultants.com. |

I am brand new to this site so forgive me if I am posting incorrectly. I have been at my job as an assistant for about six months and we are talking about promoting me to an HR manager. Our company has about 70 employees and no HR department. What websites (besides the obvious AHRMA & SHRM) and/or books could you all recommend to me regarding starting an HR department? Thanks! |

You should take the class to obtain your PHR, this will help you with all area's of Human Resources. By learning these, you will be able to decide which area in your company needs the most help. You could also look at HR vendors or companies that specialize in putting together HR Departments. It's very easy for a small company to implement an HR Department. Cindy |

Any HRD start-up should always start with an audit/inventory of what the company has: employee files, policies, procedures. It is when you have established what you have to start with that you start with the basic: establishing 201 files, T.O., J.D.'s, Policy Manuals, S.O.P. Manuals. |

Hi, I have been tasked to re-organize and develop standard processes for our own HR and I agree that the first thing I shoul do is to do a complete audit. Is there any chance that you can share with me the audit tool you used for starting up an HR unit? You may contact me directly at lui.dacera@gmail.com Thank you in advance. Lui Dacera |
