Welcome to the Institute for Human Resources for Employee Wellness! This introductory session will give you an overview of the Institute for Human Resources - Employee Wellness certification program. In a nutshell, the Institute has been designed to provide HR professionals responsible for their employees' health and well-being with the opportunity to gain certification in this particular field. What is employee wellness? It encompasses injury prevention, battling obesity, disease prevention, how technology is affecting wellness (with online challenges and monitoring), using social media, employee engagement (do you need to use incentive/reward programs), biometric data, outsourcing vs. internal programs, ROI and more. The Institute for Human Resources (IHR) Employee Wellness certification program launched on September 14 & 15, 2011 with a two-day virtual event and the second event was held on February 1 & 2, 2012. To date, over 3,700 HR professionals have registered for our programs so far.

The purpose of this session is to provide you with an update on the webcast topics and speakers that will be presenting over these two days. In addition, for those of you who have not participated in one of these events in the past, you will be shown how to register for any newly-added webcasts and make use of the virtual Exhibit Hall, where you can increase your knowledge on product and service suppliers in the employee wellness space. You will also learn how to network with your peers by visiting the lounge.

All of these webcasts have been approved for HRCI recertification credits (the only exception being this introductory webcast). This short webcast will provide you with complete information on what is required to obtain certification from the Institute for Human Resources.

The management of this Institute would not be possible without the input from the Advisory Board. This session will also introduce all the members of the Advisory Board to you.

A calendar of future events will be shared so that members can pre-register now to add the dates to their calendars.

The benefits of implementing a wellness program are widely known and ROI data continues to prove the case for adopting a wellness program regardless of the size of the organization or the size and scope of the wellness program itself. Companies often go through the four Organizational Development stages of Diagnosis, Action Planning, Intervention and Evaluation in order to implement an organization wide wellness program, however outcomes are not always the same. There are vast differences between good wellness programs and great wellness programs.

This presentation will address the three commonly overlooked elements of first generation wellness programs and how these three elements can help second generation wellness programs effectively change direction to increase their wellness program ROI and deliver desired results. Regardless of program size or organization wellness program implementation knowledge, these internal changes will help guide your population towards healthier lifestyle choices - leading to more favorable program results. Each of the three elements is often overlooked because the organization is focused on the “wellness” aspect but forget that this is still a company program and like any company program there are some essential steps that need to take place in order for an initiative becomes “institutionalized” or deeply rooted into the core of the organization.

Employee Buy-in is the first element that is often overlooked in a wellness program. The common design uses diagnostic testing as its platform for creating an action plan for programs that will be implemented during the intervention phase, but it does not implicitly mention surveying employees about their interest in various programs. HR practitioners are not the only offenders, as many wellness practitioners often fall victim to this issue as well because they feel that they know best, when in actuality it is the employee that knows what programs they will be willing to participate in. In this presentation survey samples will be provided and best practices will be offered regarding involving employees in the action planning phase.

Visible Senior Leadership Support is the second element discussed in this presentation. This element can be rather abstract as "support" varies depending on the organization and leadership team. There has to be a concerted effort on the part of senior leadership to be visibly supportive of the program and see it as a priority to their personal health which will more readily translate to genuine belief in the wellness program which goes further in the minds of the employee population. During this presentation information will be provided as to how to evaluate the senior leaderships views of the wellness program and how to provided opportunities for them to become visibly supportive and involved in the wellness program.

Corporate Cultural Integration is the third and final overlooked element that prevents good programs from becoming great programs. This is probably the hardest element to capture because it is difficult to force a corporate culture change, but once a wellness philosophy is fully integrated into a corporations culture it is the strongest ally for overall population health. This presentation will discuss best practices on integrating a wellness program into the corporate culture to turn a good program into a great program.

The future of corporate wellness is now! 5 years ago live wellness events came into vogue with corporations jumping on board to offer their employees live wellness events such as health fairs, screenings, flu shots and lectures. 10 years ago most HR people did not know what a health fair was!

On-line wellness portals offer a wellness program option that can reach all corporate employees, regardless of location. 1.       Wise choices begin with “doing the homework” of assessing what is: already in place, already paid for, driving health-related costs up, and staff resources

2.       Wise spending begins with only spending money on: what you don’t already have, taking advantage of what’s available for free, prioritizing, careful budgeting, making sure you “get what you paid for!”

Welcome to this presentation on “FACTS ABOUT PAD DISEASE”. This educational activity is designed to help communicate an important message. That message is: the importance of timely detection of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and appropriate treatment strategies that can help reduce PAD related morbidity and mortality. Atherosclerosis is the most common form of vascular disease seen by doctors today. This disease affects the blood vessels in the cerebral vascular circulation, coronary circulation, and lower extremity arterial circulation. These manifestations may result in stroke or TIA, acute coronary syndromes, intermittent claudication (pain in leg during walking), or critical limb ischemia (lack of blood flow to arms, legs). Atherosclerosis often occurs in several vascular beds, including the coronary, cerebral, and peripheral arteries, and is the underlying condition that can lead to heart attack, stroke, or peripheral arterial disease (PAD). These atherosclerotic conditions often coexist in patients, increasing the risk for developing ischemic events such as heart attack and stroke. Patients with peripheral arterial disease were much more likely to have cigarette smoking, diabetes, a family history of coronary disease, elevated cholesterol and hypertension in their history compared to those patients without peripheral arterial disease. In addition, patients with peripheral arterial disease were more likely to have coronary heart disease and cerebral vascular disease in their history. It is imperative that people recognize the importance of timely detection of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), note the signs and symptoms so that they may discuss these with their primary care physician, and understand the various diagnostic and treatment strategies that can help reduce PAD related morbidity and mortality. In conclusion, peripheral vascular disease is a major problem. Physicians must become aware of this. There are many options for therapy including novel pharmacotherapies, surgical procedures and more recently endovascular therapy. The earlier this disorder is discovered, the more likely you will have good choices for treating the disease and symptom relief. Patients should understand that leg discomfort isn’t always arthritis or getting old. Elevated blood pressure in older age patients may not suggest that another pill should be added. Surgery is not always needed to repair circulatory disease.

Look at the statistics and you realize your workforce is unhealthy: 62% of employees are overweight, among those, 26% are obese. Additionally, 33% of employees show signs of clinical depression. Corporate wellness programs are critical for addressing the health of their employees and their families, resulting in significantly greater physical and mental well-being.
The key to impacting the health of an entire workforce is to implement comprehensive, results-oriented programs and policies. Results-oriented programs include multiple components, including policies, benefits, on-site programming and high-touch lifestyle change programs. Further, Return-on-Investment (ROI) can be enhanced by including dependents in the programming as they account for 60% of healthcare costs. This seminar will focus on four key objectives for improving health and reducing absenteeism and presenteeism:
1.       Promote physical activity for employees at work and at home;
2.       Foster healthy eating at work and at home;
3.       Reduce and manage stress; and
4.       Promote emotional well-being and reduce substance abuse.
