Successful businesses are built on a vision. That vision is embodied in a strategy that guides the business. Business strategy should then cascade to each unit and level of the organization to ensure that company resources are aligned with goal achievement. Measurement of progress towards the organization’s goals is vital to management as feedback on the actions of management. Without measurement, management may drift away from the strategy and the foundational vision.
The linkage between strategy and the metrics that gauge progress toward goals is critical to providing management with the feedback needed to be successful. In fact, with linkage appropriately applied, other metrics fall away as unnecessary. The most important measures are known as KPIs or key performance indicators.
The development and deployment of new strategies keeps business moving forward toward new goals. With these new goals, the linkage to new metrics is needed to anchor the business to the necessary feedback on progress. Human Capital investments are often the largest investment a business will make. Yet the metrics linking human capital to business strategy and company vision are often the most tenuous because human resources has lagged other disciplines in quantifying success. There is often a perception that human capital involves too many “intangibles.” This session will review the process for linking strategy to actionable metrics and strategies for linking human resources strategy directly to the overarching business strategy. Recommendations for making your human resources department an engine for strategic change will also be reviewed.
