Nation's Premier Hispanic Technical Conference to Offer Pre-College and Professional Development

By:
Date: September 22 2011

Industry, CA (PRWEB) September 22, 2011
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) announces details of its upcoming annual conference to be held next month at the Anaheim Convention Center, elaborating on pre-college and professional tracks available to attendees. The conference will also feature a new Latina track, specifically addressing the needs of Latina professionals. Attendees are reminded to register for the SHPE conference prior to October 1.

For pre-college attendees, SHPE’s conference programs provide motivation, encouragement and direction to Hispanic students, driving them to complete high school, attend a university, pursue a college major in science, technology, engineering or math or related field, and ultimately pursue a technical career.

Approximately 1,000 students from the local community and out-of-state areas will attend a full day college and career awareness program for Hispanic middle and high school students.

Additionally, local high school students have the opportunity to attend workshops on college financial aid, SAT/ACT test prep, college selection, college admissions, and careers in science and engineering. Students also have the opportunity to meet with over 30 colleges, universities, and scholarship programs participating in the College Fair. Non-local students attend an additional day of workshops that feature tours of local universities.

Middle school students (6th through 8th grade) will attend a one-day program complete with hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering and math.
For professional attendees, in addition to networking, the newly expanded program offers a host of technical, professional, and leadership development seminars that include a continuous learning certification track, a business development track, and a green engineering track.

This four day conference is one of the largest gatherings of its kind, bringing together more than 4,000 Hispanic attendees, including corporate, industry and government
officials who want to recruit the best of Hispanic engineering and technical talent.

For the new Latina Track, SHPE, IBM and Intel Corporation have partnered to empower Latinas, presenting them with possible mentors and opportunities. Through this program featuring senior level Latina executives, Latinas can come together and grow their network, recognize new opportunities, and support each in professional development and achieving their goals. Programming includes speed networking and the seminar “Collaborating to Build a Smarter Planet,” an exploration of evolving infrastructure and positive response to change.

“From middle school through university and into career development, we’re proud to be part of the solution to the growing STEM crisis, supporting current Hispanic STEM professionals and investing in our future,” said SHPE Chief Executive Officer Pilar Montoya. “We’re extremely pleased with the diverse and beneficial programming we’re able to offer pre-college and professional STEM practitioners.”
