Culture of Health
Culture is one of those words that are not easy to define. Pick-up several books on culture and you are
likely to find a different definition for culture in each book. Simply stated, culture provides the frame
of reference in which we operate (how the world works) and how we view the environment in which
we live, work and play. Therefore, culture can be societal, community, organizational, familial and sub-
organizational in nature.
A culture of health then is nothing more than using health as our frame of reference and the perspective
from which we operate. A culture of health is a culture where the components of the culture support
individuals living healthy lifestyles.
