Employees Reveal Top Impacts of Stress: Trouble Focusing, Reduced Work Quality and Coworker Strife

CHICAGO – March 27, 2012 – More than half of employees say workplace stress makes it difficult to focus on tasks, according to a survey by ComPsych Corporation. Another 21 percent say stress causes them to commit errors or miss deadlines and more than 15 percent say stress causes conflict with coworkers and superiors. “Unchecked stress can result in a number of productivity-sapping outcomes, from diminished work quality to absenteeism to coworker clashes,” said Dr. Richard A. Chaifetz, Chairman and CEO of ComPsych.  

“Organizations looking to compete in a volatile marketplace are proactively addressing stress – this can enhance employee well-being and therefore engagement,” he added. “Leveraging the employee assistance program is an important step in dealing with workplace stress. Employees were asked:  How does stress impact your work? (multiple answers were allowed)

56.3% said “difficulty focusing on tasks”
21.0% said “errors and/or missed deadlines”
15.5% said “trouble getting along with coworkers/superiors”
14.9% said “missed days”
14.4% said “lateness”
28.1% said “other”
